I've sewn my own wound up with a needle and thread before. Because of it, nobody should ever question my lack of going to medical professionals.

Why would I have any reason to question such decision? It's your body. Do with it as you please.

Did you flash the correct file? There's one for the 16-17s, and one for the 18s.

yes. Techstream confirms it's correct. It was going to go from B03 to B04. The 18s have a different number.

What I would like to know is what are the metrics for a TSB? As an engineer I know what it is for our company and generally for a lot of companies but, due to Toyotas staggering volume just with Tacoma I really have no clue at all. Is it 10? 100? 1000 complaints? Even 10,000 is less than 5%... a year. Also more goes into a TSB or voluntary recall than pure complaints. Optics are just as important, meaning how does it look from a customers point of view. It's a balancing act for sure but again, because of volume, I have no idea. Even my friends at Toyota engineering don't know, but I don't have the ear of any of the top level managers though.

Plus, there is a huge difference between a wheel falling off (extreme example) and a whine between 58 and 62 mph from the rear diff on some vehicles lol, so priority comes into play too.

You can avoid a dealership and still get updates. The private shop I worked at ~10 years ago had Toyota, GM, and Ford factory scan tools with subs that would let us get the updates so I'm sure it's more ubiquitous now. Kept my 2007 and my family's Ford trucks up to date without issue.

Actually, priority could definitely come into play when it comes to ECU updates for the manual trans in particular. Literally every one of the driveability related TSBs (involving a flash reprogram) have been strictly for the auto trucks. Makes sense, since we know the vast majority of the ridiculous number of units sold have that trans. It also seems likely that we were thrown a bone (sort of) because one or more of the symptoms outlined in these latest TSBs carry over to M/T trucks (the stumble, for instance). It's obvious that they made changes to engine specific code, in that the truck drives completely differently now (OVtune also confirmed that Toyota made a large number of changes). Anyway, albeit belated, I'm glad Toyota has chosen to act and make the product better.

    ECU update best practices:

Don’t use hacked versions of Techstream for an ECU update.

Don’t use a virtual machine environment to do an ECU update.

Don’t use Bluetooth or WiFi dongles for an ECU update. (USB only)

Do turn off Windows update service.

Do turn off Windows system sleep functionality. Use the “always on” setting in power management pane.

Do turn off USB power management for the USB port you’re using.

Do plug the laptop into a wall outlet.

Do hook up a battery maintainer to the vehicle during an ECU update.

Do turn off all electrical consumers during ECU update.

Sorry to hear about this, OP. Hope you get it sorted.

Does someone have a write-up posted somewhere for a DIY b04 update? I tried searching but I can't find it.

Not that I have seen. There is a lot of good info in the manual transmission update thread, but you got to dig through all 40 pages. It has all the files and links to all the downloads needed.

Got a loaner car from a friend. Went to the in-laws for dinner. Came home and got the ECU out. Will ship to Mat tomorrow.

You can do the opposite of all of these best practices and still not screw anything up. It’s all about eliminating variables.

I know, I'm just sharing my experience. It's best to mitigate any possibility of failure.

Mine does the same as did the Camry rental that I had. I believe that this is more of a nuisance warning than actual information. It might help if something unexpected was left on, but usually, just having a door opened or the key on ACC will cause it to come up.
