I think I want an OR

Hi there, I currently drive a scion fr-s which is great. However following a bad car accident a couple of years ago my wife doesn't want to be in that car. She drives a lifted JK which is fun, but I can't be matchy-matchy with her so I discovered Tacomas. They seem to have a lot of stuff I like about my fr-s.
So here are my questions, is there anything I should consider when choosing a tacoma, pros and cons and the like?
I appreciate any advice you fellas/ladies can give.
    Thanks

Well, you're looking at the OR so you're on the right track already. Are you prepared to lose the extreme handling of the FRS?

The handling will definitely be missed, but for my wife to feel relaxed I need a taller ride. Now if you think of something that rides like an fr-s sits high, has 4 doors and is $40k, I'm open to suggestions

I'd enjoy a sunroof (wifes jeep has spoiled me there). 4 doors, minimal offloading, Buffalo winters so maybe snowplowable, maybe I see mixed things about that.

Not only is a Tacoma to FR-S comparison apples to oranges, it's more like vegetables to meat.

So other than some possible trinkets, I'd take that out of your thinking process.

Nothing against the wife and bad memories, but a bad accident in a JK would be easier to have and might not end as well as the FR-S. Their crumple zones and passenger safety are pretty good.

As far as the Tacoma goes. Test drive, test drive, test drive. Then test drive the one you buy before you buy it, assuming it has to be ordered in.

Just know it's not an FR-S in any way, and it also won't do some things the JK will. It's also not a heavy duty truck in terms of towing, plowing and hauling. Which is all ok, as long as you make sure it does what you want actually use it for.

Get a Tacoma Sport or a 4runnder Sport. Make sure you get a rear sway/track bar too. That will tighten up the suspension and give you back some handling that you'll miss.

If you plan to offroad (even if you have a minor day dream about it) get the OR. That rear locker really ups the fun factor when you're hooning about. I wish I had one.

It was a jeep we were in for the accident, almost certainly allowed the family to walk away.

Are you set on Toyota? Do you want a truck that can do truck things, or something sporty but taller? There are lots of crossovers with sporty characteristics, and some that are just plain fast.

I got a Tacoma 2014, very utilitarian. However, lately, I’ve been thinking about adding a Audi Q5 or Acura RDX to the fleet.

Yes, payment on a new tacoma would save me about $100 from the fr-s.
Ok. I do enjoy the Jeep, but my wife has one, most other SUVs these days look the same, can't go from fr-s to normal full looking vehicle, tacoma looks fun 4x4 drive, I don't need much bigger, truck bed will be nice so I can get hardware to do things around the house with. And I want to stay around $40k. So I see few appealing alternatives

If you want a Manual Trans then you are limited to the Off Road, Pro, and sport models.

Should be able to find a low/no option OR for around $32-34k in your area.

You will enjoy the change coming from a small FRS to the Tacoma especially in the winter.

Start a small savings fund and save up for a cool RWD project car (E30)!

    1) Do you live in snow country?

    2) Do you want to offroad on remote, less improved or deep sandy trails (mtns, beach and/or desert)?

    3) Do you tow a boat and/or have to drive on ramps or other slippery surfaces or steep inclines wet/or dirt?

    4) Is it for ultimate mall crawling?

If Yes to any of these, get an OR.

I went from driving a lowered 2005 RSX to an OR long bed because I needed to tow my boat and be able to traverse jacked up roads at my hunt club. Best decision I’ve made (besides the obvious difference in MPG) and I don’t think you’d regret it. Definitely test drive a few different trim levels. I test drove a sport initially and then the offroad and much preferred the off road. I waited for the right deal and picked up my ‘17 with 2,600 on the clock for a little over 31k. Good luck!

My wife is currently daily driving a new OR and loves it. She'll be getting a new MDX next year, and the OR will become my daily driver.

As others have suggested, go online and checkout all the Tacomas. Narrow down the choices a bit and then go test drive what interests you.

I went with the TRD OR just a few months ago and LOVE IT. I had an old Tundra, so I was already a Truck convert. I looked at the SR5, Sport and Off-Road, for me I felt I got what I wanted with the OR, could have saved 3K on a nicely equipped SR5 though it would have been lacking for me. The Sport felt as though I was paying more for aesthetics, though to be CLEAR a Sport/SR5 are all great. If I were you, I would look at the Limited because it will give you all the options you mentioned. I think Toyota still has the $1K rebate and I was able to get an additional $5K off sticker so the deals are there. They can discount better on the more expensive models, mine was $38,880 MSRP
