An old thread but worth a try... witch route did you go? Clutch pack or a new diff?

I have the Mech Limited Slip Differential in my truck. I think it is time to replace the clutch pack so it does not turn into an open diff. I've been searching for DIY on this topic but haven't found anything specific for Tacomas yet (quite alot of info on replacing bearings/seals or swapping the diff entirely).

Has anyone done this procedure? If so did you get OEM plates or aftermarket kit? Any special tools needed? How did you compress the spring?

Having similar issues on my '07 DCLB TRD Sport, and wondering if TheSwede's repair is feasible or if there is something worse-off with my mechanical LSD?

I jacked it up today and 90% of the time only one wheel spins at a time by hand, otherwise it spins slightly the opposite direction or does small hesitant movements in the same direction. Yeesh. Lately, my traction has been garbage in the snow and ice...I have to do this awkward/tight slow turn up a hill on my driveway that is great for testing traction. This last week or so, my LSD has sporadically kicked in, but now it seems dead. I replaced the diff oil when things started to seem funny and no change - the old stuff looked like something from the Le Brea Tar Pits.

I've only had this tacoma four months and don't know its full history. Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Edit: the fresh diff oil was Valvoline Synpower 75W90, supposedly containing a LSD additive. LSD is also sporadically sticking on, which makes for an entertaining turn on snow. It chatters from a stop when cold. It has been ranging from -3C to -10C (14F) here. Could it be possible there is build-up or damage to the clutch plates from poor maintenance?

    If nobody has mentioned this
Adding a tube of friction modifier is old outdated

    LSDs prefer LS oil
It comes premixed with the additive already inside
For example Motul Gear 300 LS
Different from their regular Gear 300
Not that I am saying use that particular gear oil
It’s just an example. The same concept applies to other brands including Amsoil
I haven’t hit the gas hard enough lately to tell how my LSD acts. It’s a struggle with bigger heavier tires to even break them loose anyway on stock 3.73 gearing

Hi, how many miles do you have on the truck?

First I think it takes some time for the oil in the diff to really soak in between the clutch plates. It is kind of strange that you have chatter with the new oil, in my world it indicates that you still have pre-load in the clutch - if it was completely worn out it should not chatter? Maybe you have a broken clutch plate that causes this, and also the intermittent motion when you have the car jacked?

LSD wears out over time so if nothing has been serviced/changed over the last 14-15 years I would bet that the clutch is worn out anyway. There is not so many other things in the diff that can break that causes the symptom you describe. You do not have any grinding/metallic noise when you drive i suppose? That would indicate other issues with the gears.

With this said I am not a mechanic - I just studied the subject because I had the same issue as you.
    I hope this helps!

    Happy New Year!

I have 278,000km on it, so a decent amount. The two previous owners did baby it, but you never really know the history.

@TheSwede - Yea, I think you're right about the pre-load still functioning in some way. It does engage correctly randomly, albeit a limited amount, on snow/ice. When it was jacked, the opposite tire would do these little 1cm-ish movements when it sort of decided to behave as a LSD. There isn't any grinding/metallic noise when I drive, no.

Perhaps, I will give it a bit more time and go from there. I've done maybe 300km since the change, so not a lot. I'm sure the somewhat cold temps are exacerbating things. I should probably prepare to rebuild/replace in the coming future though.

Thanks for your input guys, and happy New Year!

Hi just wondering if everything worked out after all?

Getting ready to swap out the gear oils in my newly acquired 2008 TRD sport and getting all the information I can gather!

    TIA

He hasn’t been online in more than a year and only posted 3 times, so you are unlikely to get a response from him,

What exactly are you wondering if it worked out?

He was having issues with his Pre 2009 TRD sport lsd as mentioned in a previous thread:

I've got a 2008 TRD sport also with a LSD I just acquired not too long ago and Im getting a bit f chatter so I was wondering what fluid he settled on and if it solved his issues.

I dont have any serious issues (hopefully). I dont have as much mileage on the truck either, only around 78000 miles.

Was just curious to know what oil he settled on and the results he got.

So I've settled on using Lucas dino 80w90 gear oil along with a lsd additive for the oil in the rear diff. They only had one brand at the local Napa here CRC so I got that. Wasnt cheap around $32(Canadian), hope it's good. I will be passing by tomorrow they're supposed to be getting a brand made here in Quebec Prolab. https://www.prolabtechnolub.com/en/products/transmission-oils-and-treatments/tda-62/
I'm going to maybe go with them for the friction modifier.
Also I dropped in at a Toyota dealer here in Quebec and they use Mobil 75w90 synthetic with the the friction modifier for lsd premixed.
From what Ive seen so far I think there are several options that could work. Right now my inside wheel wants to turn and Im getting chatter when taking tight turns on pavement. Ive only had the truck a few months and I have no idea whats in there or if the oil is due to be changed.
