My local dealership is charging 3500 over msrp on tacos, is it only in my area or is this still a thing?

In my area some are and some aren’t, but I was easily able to talk the ones that are, out of it.

In my area it depends upon where you shop and how long before you NEED a new vehicle; the dealership 20 miles north of me (where I bought mine) sells at MSRP and has literally zero inventory, so it took 8 months to get my Tacoma. The dealerships 5 miles west, 20 miles east, and 20 miles south of me all have some inventory on their lots, and all charge a "Market Adjustment". My son went to work as a sales associate at the dealership 20 miles east of me back in August (long after I put a deposit down on my truck), and just yesterday he sold a Rav4 with a $3,000 market adjustment and a Prius AWD with a $5,000 mark up.

Basically, if you can wait, you can most likely find a deal at or below MSRP, if you cannot, paying a Market Adjustment is most likely in your future.

Back in February when I purchased mine 2K was the norm...with some trim levels going for 3K to 5K over. Two months ago I got an email from a local dealer stating MSRP. Yeah, for the most part its over....its just that most dealers don't want you to think so.

Paying 5k markup on a Prius is the adult equivalent of drinking bleach

A Va dealer, Toyota of Woodbridge, sent me a buyers order for a Tacoma Pro with all the usual fees plus a $12,995 market adjustment. This was just last week.
He followed up the next day to see if I had any questions.
I thanked him for the laugh.

I have a deposit on 2023 Black pro with no market adjustment that should be in in a couple of weeks
Still been keeping an eye out for a grey one.

    Oh look, another mod....
Your local dealership are mega-douche bag's, that's why they're doing it. A lot of others have dropped it completely, but you have some that are trying to hang on as long as they can to price gouge customers.

Region, trim level, transmission will all change pricing. I worked in the business for 15 years for mainly Ford dealers. I priced my new units at $500-2,000 below invoice, before incentives. Dealers in my area that competed with me would either come close or not care and stick with MSRP. This is 2012-2016 when inventory was plentiful. So all you can do as a consumer is shop around and you’ll save quite a bit.

I'll trade you my grey one for your black one for $6500. Think about the deal you're getting.

    I’m wondering too.
I keep hearing this like folks are surprised. Yeah inventory is moving, vehicles are shipping, but they’re all sold, therefore there’s still demand. I get people see em in trucks, rail, lots,,,, but most if not all are sold.
My GF’s brother sells Hondas, and people come in all the time saying they see vehicles, like there’s now a glut, and assume there’s now deals to be had, of course he informs them of their status.

Why do people think toyota owes them a certain type of deal or something? Just for walking in the door with money in their pocket? These trucks are popular, why would toyota suddenly start lowering prices?

Everybody loves the free market until the free market happens to them

As long as people are willing to pay ridiculous prices, the dealers will ask them.
