I thought the spare tire's pressure was monitored?

My dealer had a new owners info meeting one night, and during it they warned everyone that "if you have a full size spare, then it is monitored also, so if your light comes on and all 4 tires are good to check the spare." I had already read on here that they stopped putting them in the spare in 09, but didn't want to say anything. Not sure if Toyota stopped putting them in all spares, or just the trucks.

The TPMS in the spare was discontinued after the 2008 model year.

Does anyone know for a fact if the TPMS system on an '11 will monitor five sensors? I'm of the school that believes five-tire rotations with a matching FS spare are the way to go. I know if you ask 10 different people which way is best, you'll get 12 different answers and this is how I prefer to do it. As such, I want to have a monitored sensor in my spare as it will be getting thrown into the mix every 5,000 miles when I rotate. It would obviously be better to not have to swap the sensor out of the outgoing spare into the incoming runner each time.

^^^Your spare is a blacked plain jane steel wheel. It doesn't match the other 4 wheels. Unless you plan on removing the rubber off the spare and mounting it on a matching rim of your other 4 tires, just leave it under the truck and rotate the 4 that are on the ground.

No, my spare is the same as the rest, that's why I said 'matching FS spare' in my post. I have larger tires/wheels than stock so I needed to go with a spare that worked with them.

I would just drop it in the rotation without worrying about the sensors. You will have monitoring on 3 out of 4 active tires and no TPMS light. The alternative will cost you lots of $$ for like a 25% increase in TPMS functionality.

I have a 2006 and everyone is right. I have to have a tpms in my spare or else my light is going off.

my friend bought a 2010 tacoma and they told him the spare actually had a tpms sensor in it. Well we took the spare off and the light didnt come on. So we went to discount tire and they said that as long as the newer tacomas have 4 sensors that are on the truck, with the right psi the light will not turn on. Hope this helps!

My 2008 has the TPMS on the spare. I'm glad it does because my spare loses air once in awhile and it sets off the (!) to let me know that it needs it.

I am with you although my spare will just be that. A spare. I would just like it monitored. Anyone know it the 11s will accept the fifth sensor?

Stopped at the stealership while I was in town today. The service manager wasn't 100% positive, but he was pretty sure the '11 receiver wouldn't accept 5 inputs. Also spoke to parts and had them look up numbers. The part number for the TPMS receiver in my truck was first instituted by Toyota in June of 2010. My guess is that they exhausted stock of older receivers until switching to a new '4-only' unit. Still not 100%, but certainly looks like I'm SOL on this. Guess I'll just have one running w/o TPMS. Bummer.

I'm going to do some research tomorrow, Bobbb, so I can give you a part number from my 2007 TPMS 'computer'.

I know it's just behind the stereo. I saw it yesterday when I pulled the center console apart.

Cool, I appreciate it. Once I saw that mine was a new part number from mid-2010 on, and knowing they stopped with the spare sensor before that, I figured I was screwed. I have to go to another town in a couple days so plan on hitting up a different dealer's svc/parts depts to see what they have to say as well. Call me anal with wanting all five monitored, but I hate taking no for an answer.

Something else I found. In the attached PDF (2006 FSM), the 'intelligent tester' will show definitively how many TPMS ID's you can register to the computer. Of course, that means a trip to the dealership... $$

I'd pull your stereo and compare your TPMS computer to mine.

My 09 has one in the spare? I bought my truck on Aug of 08, but it was built in July of 08, so maybe they still were installing them on the line?...

Sounds like you did get 'lucky' with an early 09 (or the dealer added a 5th TPMS sensor in the spare for whatever reason), because as Toyota documents, the 5th TPMS sensor was discontinued for the 2009 model year.
