Really, that wasn't very nice. :( No need to call him names for a mistake. It's not like he wanted to hurt his new truck. That wasnt really necessary. And I think after the third time someone slammed on him, that was enough. I think he got the message that he should not have done that.

And through all of the slamming, nobody explained WHY he shouldn't do that.

I wish I had that link....

Sorry that it happened OP. Hopefully not too much damage happened.

I must admit I read the manual and still had to rely on my own judgement as to what surfaces would give. I have a house in the Mountains of WNC . The road down is a gravel road and I always go down in 4WD but still worry that I will tear it up. It worked fine all summer long so must be loose enough. Good luck with fixin her back up

Found it! This may help you to understand about steering on pavement vs steering on soft surface. :)

You might not need a tow. Straiten wheels, drive strait, turn back to 2H. I did that in a little snow, deep on road, less in parking lot. I turned into lot and it sort of bound up. No harm done but use caution in future. The smell might have been tires sort of scuffing.

I bring the owners manual with me when I take a deuce at work, even though I've read it 5 or 6 times. It's about your truck, read it!

    1. the burning rubber you probably smelled was the tires scrubbing

    2. the light stayed flashing because there is a load on the drivetrain and you should switch to 2hi and then move the truck and it will disengage

Ahhhh!!!! The hurricane is coming! I better go make a starbucks run before it closes! While im at it I will work out my 4 wheel drive.

My 2011 is my first 4 wheel drive as well so I know where you are coming from. Don't let any responses turn you off to this forum. So much to learn from everyone.

In all seriousness, I hope nothing was seriously damaged on your vehicle.

    +1

You lloaded the piss out of the drive train. It doesn't matter the type of 4x4 if stupid enough anything can be fucked up and broken. Read the owners manual it comes with the truck for a reason.

Believe me you aren't the first one to do it and you won't be the last. I've read my manual from cover to cover many times... there's not a whole lot of information on not driving on pavement with the 4wd engaged. I think Toyota could do alot better on explaining the part-time 4wd system. I've had other Toyota trucks and know from experience but people just starting out need to know these aren't like full-time 4wd. You should be fine but allways remember when the truck is acting strange it's trying to tell you something. Try not to make sharp turns even while offroading in 4wd... make gradual turns if possible. When disengaging out of 4wd back into 2wd before you turn the knob take your foot off the gas so there's no load on the driveline...doing it that way you'll never get the "clunk" noise.
