I've heard from many older guys that zebco was the best bang for buck on fishing reels but I've broken four now. Two were normal 33 platinums and two were the 33 micro used for trout and brim fishing. I would like to have a good reliable reel that will last more that a year. I already have a abu Garcia open face that I've started using for bass fishing but I do get it tangled up on occasion. I grew up using closed face reels and prefer them. does anybody have any suggestions on who makes a decent and long lasting closed face reels? Specifically a ultra light closed face for trout.

I don't think they are the same as the old days. Now they are made with a lot of plastic parts where metal was originally used "back in the day"

That's kind of what I figured, the ones I've broke have been the nice metal gear versions and not the cheaper ones.

Zebco's have always been junk in my opinion. Having said that, I do collect them haha, I have original boxes and instruction manuals. I have some really old 66's that have never been used. I have just never liked to fish with them. I think Daiwa still makes a closed-faced variation. They are a pretty good company.

I like the history behind them and how they originated (Zero Hour Bomb Company)... Just rambling now.

Just takes practice adjusting the drag for reeling in and the brake for casting to adjust for amount of thumb pressure used. It is a PITA granted, but for spot on casting you can't beat them. I love my open faced shimanos. They hold up nicely. I typically never spend more than 100 dollars on a reel usually can find great sales on the. Take a look a WWW.FISHUSA.COM all cheap shit from China but there are a few gems.

My dad being from Central/West TX I grew up fishing from the time I could walk and hold a pole. Mostly we fished for bass and I started with closed face reels like the old Zebco because they were cheap and user friendly. You can't get a lot of distance with them compared to some of the other options. I was deadly accurate with them though. I could damn near put a jitterbug into a floating Folgers can at 30 yards. Like anything else, if you grow up with it, it becomes second nature. Too bad he didn't put a baseball bat in my hands as often as a fishing pole!

Definitely...I tried a long time ago to get into a baitcaster but maybe at the time I didnt have the patience for it. Someday I'll try again, about $100 would be my limit. I think I had a cheapo version which prob produced bad results also.

lots of people make good money fishing...

True. I think it's one of those things that I'd learn to hate if I actually had to do it for a job however. Is that weird? I don't know.
