I'd vote the camp out option in your truck... or hell you 're in CA grab a tent and park at the beach. Free shower in the morn'n and you're off... save a ton of miles and damn nice place to crash for the night...

    for better mpgs...

stick cruise to 65 mph, when you have to replace tires replace with very streetable ones and keep the air pressure at a max, avoid jackrabbit start and stops.

other than that, buying anything else to help maybe 1 mpg will take forever to recover the cost, really not worth it. if you have to have a truck, thats about all you can do. i will tell you i got 38 mpg consistently in my wifes 05 corolla NON hybrid!!

It's true, just set your cruise at 65 mph and your mileage will be about as good as it gets without taking two days just to get to work. In the alternative, buy a scooter like the Suzuki Burgman 400 which gets about 65 to 70 mpg on the highway which is much better mileage than most motorcycles and better than the Toyota Prius.

^A scooter on Cali highways, lol! Locally, sure, that would be OK but for a 250 mile commute?
