My inexperience is what did me in. I've read a million articles about stuck bolts and the use of heat and other techniques. I just thought the bolts at 90 ft lbs would be very hard and require a lot of force to break the bond especially since this caliper was never taken off because rotors were original. I'm going to invest in a impact ratchet and keep trying. Thanks guys

We have all done that. Once I was driving the girlfriends old civic when she was out of town with my sister, the timing belt snapped and bent the valves and put a hole in the number two piston. I found a junkyard engine and swapped it out over the weekend and never told her about it.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
You feel that way until someone fucks it up and then wastes your time AND your money.

Nice try OP. Curious how you broke those bolts. Rachet going wrong way? Didn't PBBlaster stuck bolts? Sometimes a bigger breaker bar goes into ohshit territory.

No not going wrong way just bolts really on tight. I used a handle off of the floor jack it was about 2 ft long. I felt the bolt move a little and I thought she was coming loose but as I continued it all of a sudden gave way and I initially thought I'd broken the bolt free until I started ratcheting more and saw a half a bolt come out. I was shocked the bolts interior looked almost like white metal in the middle. I thought bolts like that were hardened steel.

I'd be lying if I said I never put a pole on the ratchet and fuckin' give'er some to move it. Did it this weekend and the rear driver's caliper bolts were on there like MOTHERFUCKERS.

Sometime you get lucky I guess... When in doubt with stuck on bolts put on some breaking lube and let it sit for awhile. Maybe hit the other side of the truck. The problem with a stuck bolt is the bolt FAILS (that's why it turned white by the way) you could also use a torque wrench (not really supposed to do this I suppose) and just set it to a "rational" number and give it a push.

If the bolt spec calls for 85ftlbs (say: a lug nut) and you set the torque wrench to 75ft lbs and it's stuck like a mother fucker it may be a good idea to back off and soften it up.

Yea I'm learning a lot from you guys. What fooled me was the drivers side which I did first was very hard to get off also, so I just assumed the other side was similar since I was able to get drivers side off and the bolts looked good when I examined them. I should have used heat but I got tricked by the drivers side which acting similar. Hopefully my mechanic doesn't hit me hard.

We all break bolts. I was replacing spark plugs on my ex's 2002 escape v6 and to do so, you have the upper manifold off. Upon retightning, I went just a little to far and SNAP- on 2 different bolts. They were only about 1/4" thick so I should have realized i didn't need to put too much force on them. Made it throw a check engine light for a miss on all 6 cylinders. But i got lucky, I had forgotten to get new manifold gaskets and they're incredibly cheaper on Amazon. So I just told her I had to wait for those while i went and found a new manifold, drilled the bolts out, and put it back on. She never knew the difference. What should have cost me about 25 bucks cost be about 150 but we live and learn. It's alright. Life moves on. Keep maintaining that truck yourself too!!!

I tried to change brakes on a Silverado 2500 last month and it was hell. Took 5+ hours to complete.. With 3 people.. Nothing wanted to line up or fit right. Once we got it done the owner drove down the street and heard a scrape. We took off the wheel and the brand new rotor snapped. So yea it sucks. First time I did Tacoma pads they were stuck to the rotor, bent a crowbar strait and then back before they started to loosen

You dint get tricked by the driver side. That side just worked out better. Shit happens. I have several similar stories. I try to keep a friend on call when working on the truck in case I need a ride to the parts store. It's good to have a "helper", if for no other reason than they can give you a ride if needed.

Kudos on knowing when to throw in the towel. I've crossed that line and paid dearly for it.

I had 1 rotor on my miata firmly stuck on and it just took a few sharp whacks to break it loose. Aside from that I'd say NOT having a helper was the slowest part of my brake job. I also had SHIT for brake cleaner. What happened to the good stuff?
