Which should I get? 4.88's or 5.29's? And from who? Yukon or Nitro? Are there any others? What shop should I got to? Im the RGV, I'd be willing to take it to San Antonio if theres a good shop out there.

You planning on staying a 33in tire I’d go 4.88 if you plan on adding a bunch of armor then 5.29. Also I’d go nitro just a personal preference on that aspect.

If I were to add some more gear later would I regret getting 4.88s? Also, Id probably be staying in the 32in 33in, but who knows, maybe Ill get some 35's in a few years.

I guess could wait another 30K miles. When does it end? 100K or 125K? If its 125K I'll have to wait 55K miles

Just go big the auto handles that high of ratio really well. Also you don’t wanna get 4.88 to later realize you want more gearing.

Based on what I was told by the shop that did mine, 5.29's will yield really thin teeth and are subject to breaking under tough conditions. They conviced me of 4.88 and now I run 3k rpm at 75mph with 34" tires. Id stick with 488 if you plan on driving the truck on the highway

I also realize that this is in a Jeep and not a tacoma (sold mine a while back) but there's some parallels that are present.

Different diff case, so the gear thickness will vary, but the ring gear does get thinner as it the pinion gear is steeper and deeper. Also, what are your tranny gear ratios? The cruising speed vs RPM will be different as the tranny ratios aren't the same.

Yea that’s why I was saying there’s some obvious differences. I’ve got a manual as well so that throws another factor

6th gear for me is .797 for what it’s worth

It was just info that I didn’t consider before I began shopping for gears and figured I’d pass along the info

Tacoma AT is .69 in 5th and .58 in 6th. But, yeah, you don't want to go too deep or you will be upset on the highway. Too high and you will be right back to where you started after your bigger tires.

The biggest reason I want them is because of the highway. I would want better passing ability, and to no have to switch between 4th and 5th. Im currently getting 13.5-14mpgs driving on the highway at 80mph keeping it on 5th or dealing with all of the shifting in D. It does get sluggish and I have to switch over to S and shift it myself. This is already running OVTune.

+1. I have a Sport and so have an 8" rear. Went with 4.56s to keep enough strength in the pinion. Now I have a 9" rear and wish for 4.88s. That said, because of earlier point and the way I use my truck 5.29s were out for me.

So you would recommend I get 4.88s instead?

Agreed. Been around a while and make good stuff. I have motive gears in my bronco.

What size tires are you planning on running?

Friend of mine (also on here) ran 35s with the auto v6 and seemed super happy with them.

I love my 4.88 but I need to bump up to 35s or larger (but can’t because of the limitations of my front D30) in order to be more highway friendly. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got plenty of power to pass but it’s loud and obnoxious. Thankfully, I don’t have to brake for a 70-55 speed drop :rofl:gears do it for me

That’s kind of a myth. There’s no empirical evidence to support that. It sounds logical but unsupported. There are too many variables and many contributing factors with breaking an R&P. You should break an axle before then anyway so you have some issues if the R&P breaks.

Also the trucks have dual over drives. So with 5.29s our rpms are much lower at 75mph.

    Apples and oranges.
