Need some advise. I have a 07 Tacoma prerunner, been thinking of a 4x4 lately without getting my self into financing a new truck.

Should I think of transforming my 2wd to a 4x4?

what do you guys recommend I’ve done some research but seeking advice. thanks in advance.

Do it! Plenty of good info on converting into 4x4. Honestly don’t get into debt by buying a new truck just to have 4x4 and rarely using it here in Cali. Why do you want/need 4x4?

    Meh. I say No.
    It’s not worth it.

I’ve found that typically, the people that encourage you to do such a task, usually aren’t around when things go to hell. Been there, done that.

    I say No.
Not unless you know exactly what you’re doing.
    Have the time.
Have a 2nd vehicle to drive while in the process.
    Can source parts. (Good parts)
And most of all - NEED 4WD.

I’m going with not worth it even more so since you will be paying someone else to do it.

Save your money and apply to a different truck. Even if it takes you a few years.

Maybe first ask yourself how much you'd be willing to spend on this 4x4 conversion. The reason I say that is because up until now probably everyone reading/contributing to this thread figured you were going to DIY this project. With that not being the case, even if you could find a mechanic willing to take this project on, my initial thoughts are it would no longer make sense financially with the amount of effort that'll be involved (i.e. sourcing parts, research, etc.).

Save your money, time and energy and buy one. There is way too much to change over even by an experienced mechanic.

It would be too much to do. At the very least the entire front end suspension, front axle and steering components, transmission and transfer would have to be installed. Its not a simple matter.

Add the price of having someone do the conversion for you, to the money you would receive from selling your pre runner, then go buy a decent used 4WD.........

    Answering your own question then.

    Buy another truck.

You don't have to buy a 'new' truck, just a good used one w/4wd.

Well, even 4wd won't guarantee that. Just depends where you go. The driver is an important part of the equation. The old saying of "4wd just guarantees when you get stuck it will be harder to get out" is still true.

When I first bought my Prerunner i really had no intention of taking it offroad since I lived mainly in the city and did mostly on road driving. I found myself in a situation where I got stuck and wish I had 4wd. Thought about selling it for a 4x4 when I moved away from the city and came across the conversion thread on here. It's definitely cheaper to convert than buying a 4wd if you do the work yourself.

If you’re going to have to pay someone you might as well just go get a 4x4 and get rid of the prerunner.

As others have said this answers your own question. The pre-runner to 4x4 conversion is only worth it if you do it yourself. It’s not a common/standard job so it’s not gonna be cheap to have a shop do it.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
As someone’s who did the conversion, in my garage, with basic tools, with a borrowed welder and transmission jack and I’m not gonna lie, I have experience in vehicles. my first recommendation before pulling the trigger on the decision is to go through the thread and see if you feel confortable with the process, again the only thing I paid for someone to do is the $50.00 exhaust work(did not have a bender capable of the angles I needed) and the $400 driveshaft (trust me, you don’t want to deal with doing the support bearing extension or having a shit ton of vibrations due to poor balance) I put together a parts list with prices back then (03/21) that can be found on post #5 of https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...rsion-guide-for-dummies.716703/#post-25504897 to include my pictures of the process on post #62 and post #84. The great thing about all this is that you should be the one calling the shots. Overall it took me about 10 to 12 hours with the fabrication time included. I’m in port hueneme, ca and if I’m not out for work I’m always open for PM’s to include Instagram DM’s. It’s great to have a partial 4x4 with the ability to do 2hi locked, 4hi locked and 4lo locked without relying on electric actuators. Cheers.

I would only do the conversion if I planned on doing the conversion myself (and help from friends).
Do you have any Wheeling or Tacoma buddies?
Over the years I've received tons of support from cruiser heads...the Tacoma community has to be as large if not larger.

Also planned on keeping the truck for a long time...obviously :)
