I want a new head unit that doesn't scream aftermarket gaudy

It sticks out maybe 1/4". Thats negligible. If I recall, the Pioneer stuck out just as far. For the most part, most aftermarket double din players will stick out a tiny bit other than the touch screens but you are going to pay a hell of a lot more for those. If you are unhappy with it barely sticking out then im not sure what you will find to make you happy. Might as well just find yourself a full touch screen and pay the extra amount. Seems to be the only aftermarket to sit further back.

touchscreens wash out in sun.. i dont wanna aim my finger while driving.. the tactile buttons/knobs are much better for me..sitting proud of the dash is telltale of aftermarket and im sure the units couldve been made differently,, whatev..... i would be sad if i bought jvc then found another one that i like that sits flush... ill probly do the jvc at this point..

Does that JVC dim with the dash lights? I like a real dark cabin. Do any of them dim for that matter??

Yes, the JVC dims when you turn on the lights. You have to set the brightness for when the lights are on and when they are off then it will dim automatically

    ^this.

it doesn't "dim" through the range. only a set dimness and brightness. a little hard to see if you have the lights on due to rain but once you get used to the controls it's no biggie

Sorry if I'm derailing... But exactly what LEDS did you use to replace your dash and climate control lights? It looks perfect!!!!

Just installed my JVC over the weekend. It doesn't stick out at all and color matches really well. Very happy so far. I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

@JtacoB You can set different levels of brightness (like frizzman said). One for headlights on and one for headlights off. It doesn't get quite as dim as I would like it but I too prefer almost no light in the cab.

@amkaos. I lied. It does stick out a decent amount. Maybe an 1/8th inch.

I agree that quarter inch is nothing..it's just this: car factory components in any brand are Always flush and seamless..if something isn't that way, it's an obvious aftermarket..Altho the jvc might be uber better now I'm not in a huge rush to change my head unit...here's why exactly: I found this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=17CGS529EJA5FS7ZW7XZ

Reviews really like it, hope I like it well enough too
I decided to give this a go in the meantime. No it's not factory looking..yes breaks up dash profile..yes there's a really odds that I'll go with jvc anyway...but I just got this truck like 3 weeks ago...I spent some 775$ on remote starter, alarm..that does everything under the sun, including proximity sensor , smart phone control, geo tracking on and on...New headlights...holidays coming up...decided to save some chips and hope I care bout the Amazon thingie I bought..you all did convince me that jvc is the probable way to go in that direction

You were complaining about the JVC barely sticking out but you are ok with that crazy gadget sticking oddly out of your cig lighter? To each their own I guess

Hands down the best stereo for 1st gen if you dont want to spend 400 dollars. pioneer FH-X720BT. This head unit is about 110 dollars from wherever. Im beyond impressed. I havent even put the aftermarket mids in yet because the factorys sound so good! This one does charge devices as well as sync. It is built for apple devices, but works with android as well supposedly. I can attest to the Apple Ipod classic integration to be flawless so far, as well as the BT on my iphone 5s. Its a beautiful thing! plus wired mic above rear view makes bluetooth sound great for people you're talking to.

That was the first unit I installed and sent it back. You cant dim it low enough and the light bars on either side of the the unit are super bright at night. It says in the instruction that you can dim it but even after speaking with the techs at Pioneer they confirmed that it was a misprint in the manual.
