If I wasn't satisfied with my mileage I would buy something else. It's a truck. If you don't want a full size then you don't want a diesel.Plus, you can buy a hell of a lot of gas for the extra cost of a diesel. The V6 puts out adequate torque for the size of the truck and its tow rating.

Its the government. They make broad general rules and companies must follow them. As said they clumped small trucks with passenger cars, so manufacturers made their mini trucks mid-sized so they would have different, easier rules to follow.

When I worked in Australia I use to drive a brand new 3L turbo diesel hillux. It was awesome. Was very peppy for a diesel. I was expecting a more old school diesel feel, but those things haul ass! I miss the sound of the diesel

Just looked, $22,000 for a swap with an auto tranny, $22,500 for a swap with a manual tranny. Must be inflation...

You're better off getting a beater car as a commuter.

I drive a diesle all day, no thanks to drive 1 all the time thats my opinion.
I am getting an average of 22 mpg ,as my daily commute in moutain curves and city,so pardon my confusion as to why I see most everyone getting 16 to 20 mpg. What are your driving habits?I am not i a hurry when not working drive like 50 in a 45, 60 in 55 and so on still getting 22 mpg in stock air filter 4x4 V6 AT SR5.

It's all about the oil companies, man. Diesel is actually easier and cheaper to make, and the ultra low sulfer blends are super clean. But oil companies have massive investment in gasoline refining in this country. They're not going to walk away from that anytime soon. They've got a good thing going and they know it.

New to me but certinly not new
Someone said big trucks don't have the emmissions hoops well thats wrong, they do. The real reason diesel isn't an option for small cars and trucks is those hoops it is not economiclly feasable and some can't meet the strict guidlines they need to meet here in the u.s so they just sell them overseas. If the market was there............. This country is very anti diesel.

Now I am actually very surprised the mpg I got in just this 1 tank I have gone through in my new to me 95.5 extra cab with 260,000 miles almost 23mpg. Granted only 1 tank I will know more after I run through several tanks. I had a 99 ranger new till 01 and that averaged 18/19mpg.

Now I have a jetta tdi (diesel) it gets around 50mpg. What I am thinking and have been for some time is making a swap, steal the motor and tranny from jetta and throwing into a small truck (now I have the truck to do it). But not sure if I ever will, but the thought is there.
