There's a saying; "You can pick the house, but you can't pick the neighbors". It's true anywhere, whether you're in an apartment or in the sticks 10 miles to the next neighbor.

good thread.. I fortunately have no issues with real hell neighbors like some of you, but before we bought a house, we lived in an apartment building for longer than we would have liked, and there were all kinds of weirdos around there.
there was this one woman we just called "crazy lady," who was on some wild religious trip and possibly also had some mental issues. I think she was some variety of black israelite, she was an African American woman, but she thought she was Jewish, and also big into Jesus. she was like five feet tall and 110 pounds, and I was terrified of her, because she was like 500 pounds of intense, and I'd occasionally end up alone in the laundry room with her, more on that in a bit.
She and her son wore these bizarre robes every day, I found an old picture I took and attached it below. She had an absolute beater of a car, and after getting in, would pray and chant for like five minutes before trying to crank it, sometimes her prayers worked, and other times they didn't. She would throw magic oil on all the doors to the building to drive the demons out. Her teenage son had some kind of cognitive disability I think? He didn't talk, and she wouldn't cut his hair or beard because he was a "nazirite", like Samson. But he had the typical beard density of a teenage boy, so it was really thin and ratty, but also long, a combination you don't see very often for good reason.
Anyway, there was one laundry facility in the building, and if you were unlucky on a given day, you'd walk in, and she would also be in there, and immediately be up in your face screaming about how satan is coming through your computer or some shit. She had lots of apocalyptic visions and wanted to tell you all about them. It's hard to describe, but she had this freaky intensity that honestly kind of scared me, despite being a grown man and bigger than her. One time I was in there, and she starts up about how she belongs to "the tribe of Judah... the LION!!!" and starts trying to roar like a lion at the top of her lungs. I just noped out of there that time and decided to do laundry later.
at one point, there were a bunch of Indian guys in the building who had a restaurant. I heard a ruckus one day, and looked out the window to see that crazy lady was chasing these guys to their van, screaming about the earthquake that God was going to smite Peoria with. they were walking about as fast as they could and all just looking straight ahead and wasted no time getting in the van.
there were a few other characters from there that I'll tell you about later, but I do not miss apartment livingIMG_20190207_093800.jpg

They used to 'preach' in NYC and were known as "The klan with a tan"

A friend of the family lived adj. to one of their areas, definitely not the best neighbors at any rate!

Yeah they're not prevalent around here, and i think maybe she wasn't the regular kind? because she definitely associated freely with white people, she would do a thing once a year where she put up a canopy outside and sing and dance around under it and shake a tambourine all day, and some white lady would be there doing it with her, and there was this guy with a red beard who drove her around frequently. I'm not sure because I didn't ask her for more details about her religion lol

I have neighbor that lives directly behind me but one house over. Basically our back yard corners touch. He only works in his yard after dark on Sunday nights. He has the loudest push mower I have ever heard. This thing has no muffler and the motor is always hunting. And his yarn is quite large so it takes him about 2 hours to mow and then weed-eat. He will only get out the leaf blower on Sunday nights after dark to. If gets dark at 6:00 pm then he's out at 6:30. If it get dark in Summer at 9:00 pm then he waits till 9:30. I went out and asked him one night while my wife was trying to take a nap before working 3rd shift. If he could possibly do this some other time. He politely explained that he was a Pharmacist and this was the only time he had to do yard work. Now I try and understand people situation. But in the 12 years we've lived there he has only been off on Sunday nights? And whats the deal with only after dark Winter or Summer?

    I think he's secretly a Vampire. :spy:

This has happened before to me. I was that dude, working 12 hour days 7 days a week. I tried to hire gardeners when I could so that they would do it during the day but most are pricey and do a terrible job. There was once when I was awake at 3am and sat out front sipping coffee until I saw people leaving for work around 6am. Then I figured it was ok to start doing yard work. Even tried an electric mower to see if it'd be quieter but they're not really.

Not sure of situation but I've met a few older folks with SLE which makes their skin really really sensitive to sunlight so they're vampires not by choice lol

Living In a shitty apartment when i met my wife. Neighbors weren't bad, but people in other buildings were. The first time she spent the night, she woke me up at 3am, talking about some guy outside. Dazed and confused about what she was talking about, i got out of bed to look out the window, as she insisted i do. It was the middle of winter, and cold that morning. It took a minute for me to get my bearings, and see what was going on. There was a guy, completely naked, trying to win a fight with the garbage dumpster across the street. He was losing badly, possibly bleeding, and kept shouting as loud as he could, and repeatedly throwing himself at the dumpster. She said we should call the cops, and i told her i didnt think it was a crime to physically assault a dumpster, and went back to bed, after laughing at him for about ten minutes. Not sure what he was on that night, but I’m pretty sure he regretted it the next day.

****ing crazy cat ladies. We have them around here. They are big into TNR. Trap Neuter Release. So we have colonies of these damn feral cats, that basically shit and piss everywhere. The new top on my son's Jeep is a scratching post, my tires on my Tacoma are pissed on, as are my wife's JL Wrangler. Landscaping is a litter box. Sitting out last summer, I noticed a stench from underneath the deck that can only be something dead. Had to take off three deck boards to find the remains of a half dozen rabbits. Legally, we can't do anything about it. TNR is recognized by most municipalities. My thoughts.... you pick up a feral cat, take it in for vet care. You become the defacto owner. Releasing it in the colony should be animal abandonment and charged accordingly. OTOH, I can take care of the problem quietly.

BTW, I have two cats. Lucy and Gus. They're kept inside. Where they belong.
