I’ve seen a 4 runner get hydro locked in the middle of the desert in maybe a 24” deep puddle. Snorkel is cheap insurance in my opinion. Helps with dust too like people have mentioned. Of course at least probably 50% of people put a snorkel on cuz it looks cool and they will never use it but the same can be said for almost everything.

It’s odd that in North America everyone gets a snorkel but they don’t install electric fans or carry water crossing bras. In Australia we did the snorkel and fan at the same time.

    What’s a google?

Joking, kinda. Piece of fabric that you occupy strap across the front of the car to keep water from running straight into your engine bay. You obviously need to keep your bow wave and not stop and start to get best results.

Yea he was 100% going faster than I would have. He like a lot of people didn’t know his limits but it doesn’t change the fact that he hydro locked his motor 3+ hours from any pavement. We had to pull his motor apart in 110 degree heat because he was in our group and we wanted to get his truck out under its own power. This was for sure caused by his own stupidity and I 100% agree this most likely would not have happened if he wasn’t being an idiot. With that being said, I felt like he got a lot of water in his intake very easily, water was literally pouring out of his head and intake when we took it apart. I felt like a snorkel would have kept this from happening so I spent $300 dollars and put a snorkel on my truck. I do a good amount of solo trips and it’s just one extra precaution I can take to keep me going.

Edit: I should add, a snorkel isnt the end all be all to not hydro locking, you still have to not be an idiot.

Apparently it’s a tarp you throw over the front end before going nose first into water.

Isn’t going to help if you splash water into the intake via the wheel-well like what happened do you.

I'd show you how to use a snorkel but it's way beyond NSFW. It's the extreme end of.....

Yes they do float. Well more bob and they come down very slowly. Mine was zero traction on the front would lurch up and come back down slowly, get a bit of traction and go back up.

I've been in very deep river crossings before as in up to the windshield when I worked in Africa and our trucks were floating along getting very little traction. Typically the rear floats, but I have had the front up and had guys shove us sideways. or back to get out.
