I've never used a torque wrench for spark plugs. I always just been cognizant not to over tighten and used electric grease on the threads. It sucks to try to pull a seized spark plug out. I always ended up removing the spark plug tubes cause of this. I've built several 3sgte's, 7mgte's and 2jz engines without torquing to a specific in-lb. I generally use the ole wrist tight method.

I have to ask, how many miles on your truck? Why are you changing them?

    No worries.

I've done a few timing chains on Xterras, they're not fun to work on. Sometimes it's worth shelling out the cash to avoid a huge headache.

IT SUCKED! The passenger side took about 20 minutes. The driver side however had the intake manifold then a wire loom running over the coil packs. Also there is a bolt on the rear of the manifold that you have to use an extending magnet to retrieve.

No, you don't. I have the exact same setup he has and did it without removing anything other than the CAI and associated plumbing. The intake stays on. Just go through the drivers wheel well and loosen, but not remove the support brackets and it's smooth sailing. I found the plastic retainer clips to be the biggest challenge of the job. Toyota plastic clips are numerous and painful. Your fingers start to hurt after the 93rd one.

Loosen that rear one next time, but don't remove it. Makes fighting to get it back in a non event since it's already there. Doing it as the book says it should be done is crazy hard and long.

I was quoted 900 for transmission fluid, plugs, belt and a couple other things (maybe front diff and transfer case?).

Nonsense. It was a valiant effort And there's many who don't read all the posts who may have seen yours and though "f@ck yeah! I can do this myself."

If you can't do it yourself, find a private mechanic you trust. Price will be around $200. I got a mechanic I trust to work on all my vehicles. (He's worked on my cars for 25 years) Once you and a good mechanic get a good rep with each other the price drops 25% at least.
