It’s a V6 midsize truck. No forced induction. It ain’t going no where fast. But it will go anywhere you tell it to.

First OP, congrats on doing a test drive. Well done.

Now the bad news. I don't think any modifications will enable the 3rd gen to equal the second gen 4.0. While I have not ever driven a 4.0 second gen, I have read the accounts on TW of burnouts towing 2k pound trailers loaded with firewood, etc. They sound pretty cool.

But good luck with your efforts if you decide to buy one.

I think a small truck with a small engine is never going to feel powerful, it’s doing exactly what it’s designed to do. If it doesn’t feel fast enough for OP, move on to something that floats your boat, don’t like modifying, wrong truck.

Right? It's like you're a photographer and need a supermodel for a bikini shoot. Do you hire Rosie O'Donnel and put her on a diet and exercise plan and appointment with a plastic surgeon, or just ring up Doutzen Kroes?

dang it, i should have just gone out and got this one instead of trying to butch my grocery getter/mall prowler together myself at great expense!

Pff, everyone knows that those Atoyot's have horrendous reliability issues. Whenever consumer reports does it's annual ranking, these don't even make the chart.

this is just a rare misprint edition. worth 4x the value of the corrected version.

I have had 2 second gen manuals and now I have a 3rd gen manual sport, and this truck runs better than the 2nd gens! Jesus how fast do you want go? that's the problem with people these days they drive to fast! Slow down and smell the roses, or maybe I'm just getting old.

What I learned from the WRX forum: most people complaining about rev hang have never really experienced it and wouldn't know what it was if it bit them on the butt. It's a catch-all excuse for "I don't feel I'm driving this vehicle as fast as I possibly could."

Agree. I wish they wouldn't even put tachs on vehicles (they weren't OEM when I learned to drive in the stone age LOL). Then people wouldn't complain about such-and-such at 6000 RPM, red zone this, red zone that, they would just drive the vehicle by feel and sound.

My first car (Celica) had 85 horsepower and took about 11 seconds to go from 0-60. And I still thought it was fun to drive.

Says the Chevy guy in a Toyota forum. Really dude, you're popping up in all sorts of threads trying to start shit. At what point will you realize that none of your submissions are actually constructive and just opinionated slant toward your preference of vehicle. Let it go, it's annoying already.

People need to know what kinda of piece of shit it is so they don't make a mistake. So you would encourage someone to buy a POS. What kinda of person are you?

Plus it is not my opinion, the Chevy is truly a better truck

This and I'm done with you. I don't encourage anyone to buy anything, but you're the Chevy guy, so while I'm not uniquely qualified on what a POS is, you certainly are. I am the kind of person that recognizes a flake when he sees one. Good day.

If I needed a truck bed again I'd buy a used 3G Tacoma. 2nd Gens are getting a bit long in the tooth used but good trucks, kind of a tossup between the two gens.

I test drove a 2016 Tacoma auto when they first came out, it was obvious the throttle response off the line was shit, but that's the drive by wire. And there's a torque dip right about 2200-2500 rpm, I guess that's when it switches cycles.

I'd invest in OVtune and probably be happy. There isn't anything in the midsize market that can compare to a TRDOR for versatility at the price point.
