Or play with cruise control and transmission at different speeds to figure out what works best. You've only had yours for 6k miles, I've had mine for 18 months, 20k miles and have become very accustomed to how the truck performs. I can tell you one thing, cc on a Toyota has always hunted at certain speeds and if you want it to hunt less you either not use it at the speed you want or find a speed that it will hold gear better, assuming you've had both transmission reflashes completed.

What are you going to do if the new diff whines at 55-65 mph too? What if it whines up to 150k -200k miles without any drama?

"I bet a Prius, Lexus or Cadillacs offer quieter rides."

Yup, much lower to the ground, quieter hwy tires and more sound deadenig materials

"You as smitty should hang out, you gots lots to talk about."
I don’t think so, he likes hanging around the dealer to get all the free coffee & doughnuts he can lay his hands on, and I hate wasting my time there. I much rather workout and have a ice cold beer at hooters afterwards with my free time lol!

As for the recalls on the 3rd Gen Taco, there’s only two on the ’16 model that I’m aware of vs 5 on the GMC Sierra, big difference!
And If I was to buy a full size truck, this would probably be my choice because I can get upfront bench seating and carry 6 passengers on a short trip.
My opinion overall is they can last if your patience holds up with all the nickel & dime B/S nuisance repair issues, but when the front & rear seals on both the engine and transmission start to leak, that sucks! No biggie though, you just have steam clean driveway stains often and keep up with the fluid levels. But I’d rather sip on a ice cold beer or martini instead.

But as you can see from the data below, the facts speak for themselves and if you google GM AFM issues and oil burning issues, you’ll find even more things that aren’t even mentioned.

I do admire your loyalty to the brand in spite of it all, it’s what keeps them in business.
But if it was me having all the problems instead of Smitt, I’d be long gone because money talks B/S walks.

I agree with the lemons though, and I do know how to make lemonade, so not scared of the GMs lol!
    Cheers!

He checked today and said that I had latest flash. Hopefully at some point they will find a compromise for shifting. Fingers crossed that the dampers for diff will help. Dealership has lifetime warranty on drivetrain so if noise is held to acceptable level I have no problem even if gears destroy themselves later.

Concerning the transmission shifting, my 17 OR shifts fine. Yes, it downshifts on hills but that is OK with me - when it does it is crisp. Higher RPM on a small engine is not a durability problem - an oversquare engine like our V6 runs lower piston speeds at high RPM than a big V8.

Motor Trend did a comparison the other day on the Colorado ZR2 vs a Raptor and a Ram. I found this comment very interesting:

Motor Trend: "In the end, the Colorado’s powertrain kept it from a win. The V-6 makes its power high in its rev band, but the gearbox wants to keep revs low. The two refuse to work together. As good as the ZR2 is off-road, its powertrain ruins the on-road experience."

Sound familiar? The trucks are forced into a shift up too quick mode to try to meet the government mandated mileage requirements. A small V6 without a turbo is not going to make the torque of a large V8 - the only way any engine can make more power is to pump more CFM of air through which allows burning more fuel - thus you get more power. Without a turbo, the only way to do that is RPM or displacement (thus the torque of a big V8). Not magic, just physics. If you want "barely touch the throttle" super torque you are going to have to go with a full size with a big V8 or go Ecoboost and ignore the lag. There is no doubt that some of the sluggishness at mid speed cruise is the engine being in Atkinson mode, but the same effects are seen in the FCA V8 - 6 - 4 cylinder deactivation engines - again they are doing that to save fuel. If you want to go, prod the throttle, the engine comes out of Atkinson back into Otto, and away you go. Think of it as another version of turbo lag if that helps.

Consumer Reports has never liked the Tacoma. I've had 5 Tacomas since 1999, and none were reviewed well by CR. Their major complaint, and the reason that the Honda always wins out, is that it rides like a truck! Can't argue with that.

My 17 is fine. I don't mind the AT. This is the first truck I've ever owned with an AT, and I like it.

In waiting on the 18 but man part of me really wants to just get the 17 but I really want to get 18 model with the safety adds. Plus if it will have leather with premium and tech pkg is good too. Plus some hope that they tweaked some issues

Just wait. It will not be that long. Also, you may benefit in having some of the major 3rd gen bugs worked out with the 2018.

One good way to get a long test drive in is to rent a truck for a few days. I ended up renting a 2WD Nissan Frontier before leaving the mainland and had some fun with it on easier trails, light mud, and various stretches of city and highway driving. Whenever I decide to buy a new truck again this will be how I really test it before hitting a dealer.

Funny enough, the day before I left the States I test drove a third gen Tacoma. I had no problems with how the truck drove or accelerated. I actually liked it a lot.

Well , I pulled the trigger today on a quicksand ,four door Long bed ,premium electronics ,tow pkg off road model. Had a few goodies I could of done without. Such as a moonroof and tubular bar steps. But that's what was available and I needed a ride. Put all of 11 miles on it ,so far so good! Lol

Congrats on the truck! The Sunroof is really nice in the evenings or when its not very hot during the day, didn't think I would be too crazy over it but now glad it has it.

Wish mine had a moon roof. I'd probably only open once a year. But they're cool...and not offered on Pro's.
