I owned a 2007 Tundra and a 2015 Tundra, I get 6 miles more to the gallon in the Tacoma, Thats 120 miles more on a tank of gas!! I think there's something seriously wrong with you're truck if you're getting almost the same as a Tundra....

It goes to show that there are a lot of factors in high performance besides HP. It's the low end torque of the 2nd gen that helps it. It's tough to replace displacement with technology unless maybe it's being replaced by an electric motor.

Not to mention the new ZR2. Pretty cool, potentially the first real competition Tacoma had ever seen.

But there is no reason they could not have made a 4 cylinder turbo or some thing similar. Fuel efficient and fun.

Funny that you mention this. I test drove the new Limited Tacoma, the 3.5L felt like a moped when I punched it. So I decided on a boosted 2nd gen... No problems any more. :D

Although, a first gen v8 tundra would be a blast! Also note, they put the v8 in a 4runner for a bit!

I installed a power pedal deal on my MT, it works. Basically it tell sthe computer your smashing the gas quicker and futher than you really are so I drive it like my 2nd gen and not like a 4 cylinder. It sounds weird but if the truck was set up like this from the factory I would have never complained.

Im using it in sport mode, the higher up modes make it too snappy.

That is my guess as well. It seems like many new cars these days have a much less sensitive throttle tip-in.

I feel that Toyota picked a wrong motor (3.5L) that has a poor low end torque and poor throttle response. On the paper the peak HP and Torque figures of this 3.5L look descent but not on the streets. The motor's characteristics seem more suitable for higher revving passenger cars not for a truck, and in fact it is used on both Toyota and Lexus badged cars. To make the situation worse Toyota messed up on A/T shifting algorithm or mapping in the ECU that tries to hunt for higher gear whenever possible (to fix this issue a TSB has been issued). To feel the power/torque wanted, the rpm has to be kept at higher range, then the mpg sux. A classic example of double edged sword situation.

I think you have this totaly correct.

I would bet 2019 sees a new motor.
