    2jz ge?
or even better 2jz gte yess

no one really uses I6 anymore, they suck on fuel, but are the most balanced engine out there and probably one of the most durable.

I feel the V6 should be the low option and a V8 be the higher option lol.
God I don't even want a I4 in my car, nvm a truck with a lot more weight.

Maybe a turbo diesel 4? something that at least has some torque. after all for anyone saying hills HP is not what you need its torque.

    I've had both.... The 2.7 in a 99mt and an 09mt and the 4.0 in my 15at.
There is a lot of cumulative elevation change on my 30 mile 2 lane rd commute and let me tell you I wish I would of gone 4.0 a long time ago lol. It's nice to not have to pull the hills in 3rd at a screaming 4000 rpm. And to be able to pass without 4 miles of planning and preparation is pretty sweet lol.

On the other hand, this extra power has caused me to be lazier and less attentive to the terrain. That and the at lol

Time will tell if the 4.0 is as reliable for me as the 2.7s have been.

I do 80 just fine without the truck being loaded. Thats why I got the 4 banger. I was impressed by it and it meets my needs. It also allowed me to save money not buying a high end V6 model just for the manual. Plus I personally like 5 speeds more than 6 speeds. For me everything pointed to the 4 banger w/ manual trans. I'm not going to deny it's slow though, my friend's 2000 v6 sienna is definitely faster. But it's all good. Getting the supercharger for this tacoma will be fun.

Ive owned the 3.4 V6 in the past and that was a great motor.

This 4, the 2TR, is adequate but definitely requires patience. It goes nowhere fast; I need 2nd gear to get over the mountain passes out here, and towing anything at elevation would be interesting to say the least. Im ok with that, although if the price was the same I would have taken the 6.

Sorry, quoted the wrong post. The truckyeah article said it was only $1500 more for a V6 which is just really not true.

I drove a 4 onto the interstate in Atlanta. It went but it felt draggy. I had bought a 4 in a Ranger 20 years ago and regretted it for the 5 years I owned it. I decided to get the V6 and I'm happy with it.

I would have to agree with Lucky Toy, I have had 6 toyota's since I was 23. And am now 44. A variation of V6 with 5 speed,Auto, 4 cyl with 5 spd and auto etc..one was a 4 runner 4 cyl 5 spd..the rest were trucks! My 2000 4x4 short cab 4 cyl 5 spd did ok as someone stated because of the 5 spd I could run up the rpm's. My first V6 is my current 2004 Trd and it is amazing!!! eVEN WITH A AUTO TRANS IT WILL SMOKE THE TIRES !!! Even that being said, today I went to the dealer very excited to maybe buy a 2016 4x4 4 cyl (all I can afford right now at $28,000 for a basic 4x4 Sr.) and let me tell you the 2016 4 banger 4x4 automatic is gutless and was so slow merging onto the freeway on flat ground I was embarrassed!!
People were actually tail gating me and rushing around the side of me!! I even asked the sales rep, "Do I have the e brake on?...am I in the wrong gear (its a auto) Lol...he said, "NO! There gutless!! I can not justify buying a 2016 v6 Trd right now with a beauitful 2004 v6 Trd lifted with no issues that is almost paid off.... so I left almost disappointed with Toyota for the first time in 30 years but grateful I have a v6!! I can also tell you before this v6 I had a 4cyl automatic 2wd extra cab I drove for a 178 k of the 224k on it and it was worse on gas than my current v6!! So my opinion...??? If you have to settle for a 4 cyl on a 2016 BUY A 5spd!!! But it will still be gutless and you will use more fuel running up your rpms! Or save and buy a V6! I personally am keeping my 2004 Trd v6!! When I got back in and left the dealer I merged at the same ramp and blew everyone away!!! Lol..
I can also agree with what others said about mileage on the v6...I have had the 4 cyl 5 spd 2000 4x4 extra cab and now have the 2004 v6 trd extra cab auto trans and the v6 gets better mileage and does not work near as hard! Recently I towed my dump trailer with my V6 and had 2700 lbs of garbage plus the trailer weight and my v6 full of tools and was headed up to the mountains on us 50 to truckee and the cruise control kept that v6 at 62 mph even on the hills without over working!! The 3.4 liter V6 is amazing! And I have seen them with as much as 331K on the original motor!!! Anyway just my 2 cents!! Stay away from the 4 cyl auto!! I highly reccoment to everyone that you do what I do before I buy any truck!! I rent the exact model from the dealer and drive it in the same conditions I drive daily! Then I know I wont be bummed. Its funny because back in 2004 I rented a V6 extra cab Trd auto trans and loved it and in 2014 finally bought one!! Thanks for hearing me out!!!!!!!!! I am new hear and have gained a lot of knowledge from all of you over the years reading your answers!!!
