I went through this before deciding which coilovers I wanted Fox, Icon and King. The interesting thing I dug up is no one really took into consideration the combination of different materials used to constructing the shock bodies. Aluminum by it self which can also be treated is very good against corrosion bc the surface will oxidize and form a protective coating. If damaged it can repair its coating almost immediately.

For OP instant the Icon body of the shock is steel with CAD coating (Cadmium which forms a white oxidation and is better than zinc coating) and aluminum machined parts.

FYI Cadmium is a chronic poison similar to lead and mercury so be sure to wash hands after handling the shock body

So I got a reply back from ICON and they said they have a 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects, so they said I can send it back and get it "repaired" then go through their claims department to get it done for free. This is such a pain in the ass, I wish they would send me a new shock and I will ship the old one back because the shock is on my daily driver and I don't have another vehicle to drive to get to work. so what do I now??????

Send it back like they requested, get a rental car for the interim and chalk it up to the price paid for driving a vehicle that is modified with aftermarket parts.

Or clean the corrosion the best you can, apply fluid film or equivalent and continue driving with reasonable certainty that the rust won't get any worse as long as you keep on it.

Some companies will work with you and do exactly as you said on good faith. Maybe tell them your situation and ask if they can? Sometimes they will.

Even if they don't on good faith, you can most certainly tell them the situation, pay for a shock out of pocket for a deposit/core charge until you send in your own shock for replacement and they should refund you the deposit/core charge

That's a bummer OP, hopefully they can work with you like others said. When the time comes, I plan to actually buy a second set of coilovers to swap out when mine need to be serviced. That way I can always have fronts ready in case I need them as my truck is a DD as well.

See if they will take a deposit and send you a new set then get it back once the claims dept gets your old ones.

No need, really. You should just keep the stock suspension. The fronts are easy to swap out.

Depends if he is lifted and stuff. In my case though, stock wont work with LT.

Is that Icon Stage 3 corrosion, or just Stage 2?

..sorry couldn't pass it up . That sucks though, if you have the funds I'd swap them for Radflo or Fox, send the Icon's in for the claim/warranty fix, and sell them when you get them back. If you do your own suspension work you probably wouldn't be out much in the end. Metal tech frequently has 10% off Radflo and Fox can be had for ~8% off through AutoAnything if you call and haggle your way down. Good luck.

    +1. Never again.

In OP's case, I would take the shocks off (30 min per side), clean the rust off as best as I could, apply sealant or other protective substance, and reinstall. Then wash and protect them religiously.

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
i called because one of my rears was leaking with only a 100 road miles on it. called and talked to a guy and he was just like "yeah, they need to be rebuilt. go to the website and fill out the form. he wouldnt even take my order over the phone. i also asked him about custom brackets because theirs woouldnt work with my bumper. he basically told me i was on my own and to find a fab shop. thats fine but maybe he could have given me some dimensions or templates or something that wouild have helped me make mine. entire call was like 2 mins before i finally let hime get rid of me. maybe it was a busy day or something, no big deal. but i shouldnt have to pay for leaking shocks with 1000 rtoad miles. also on expedition overland youtube channel, theirs broke as well. just not real impressed.

Yup. One of my front coilovers was empty of oil within ~5 weeks of being installed. Spent 2.5 weeks waiting for the rebuild. Nothing but incompetence from Icon.

King makes the best shocks I hear.

OP - You live in a snowy area with a lot of salt in the road? Salt will do that to anything. No matter what brand...

Eh. I wonder about Icon sometimes. They charge a premium for their components, some of which aren't any better than their competitors. What they do have is an incredible marketing strategy with their "stage" packages, it induces competition about the consumer to "up-stage" if for no better reason than thinking they're getting a better product and/or suspension system without really knowing what's best for their own individual use. I'm sure they make good stuff but their mission as a company seems entirely capitalistic and advantageous. I'll go with old school customer support, competition heritage, and competitive pricing any day.

Sorry, I may get flamed but the whole "stage" thing and what its induced in the actual Toyota community really erks me. I guess I've been involved in marketing and branding long enough to recognize it. If they offered supreme customer support perhaps I'd feel differently.. at least you'd be getting something extra for buying into their scheme.

I just got an email back from ICON they can not send me a new one and they told me to fill out a claim then send the shock in to be re-plated/repaired, this is such an inconvenience on my life i wish they would work with me more. The reason i went with ICON is because I heard they were the top of the line but i guess i was wrong. I will never buy from ICON again and i will suggest to others not to buy as well.
