Icon coilovers up front. Coastal off-road bumper center section, tubes added to the sides for custom hybrid bumper. Diy retrofit projector headlights. Chevy 63 leaf springs. (Hate them, designing a diy 3 link that will utilize king 2x12's)
Hey guys! I have heard a lot of people complain about how their Tacoma's with Icon 2.5 coilovers ride super stiff and rough.

My initial impression with them, after 10,000 miles would be that I agree. My truck is a 2002, extended cab, 4 cylinder with only a coastal off-road bumper upfront. So not heavy by any means. I never had this truck from how it was from the factory, so not sure how much lift I gained when I installed the Icons. Anyways, from their suggested settings I had to add quite a bit more preload to get the truck to sit how I wanted. I have Chevy 63 leaf springs in the rear, so granted it was probably lifted higher back there than stock by quite a bit.

After 10,000 miles with them I was just so disappointed how rough and jarring the ride felt. Unless I was going really fast on dirt roads, it just was not comfortable and it didn't felt all that confident.

I believe kings run 14x600 pound springs in their setup so I figured I'd give that a shot before taking the icons completely out. I ordered some Eibach coils from a local supplier for less than 200 bucks out the door. They were really easy to swap out with just a spring compressor from O'Reillys.

Since the 14 inch coil is longer, when the collar was all the way loose, the spring barely touched it. I set the truck down at that setting, and it was only about a half inch lower than what I had my previous springs set at. I had to add very little preload to get where my ride height was at before.

After driving around for a bit, it's so much better. The truck is way smoothPXL_20240301_020356084.jpg PXL_20240301_020025473.jpg PXL_20240229_030017772.jpg PXL_20240229_032012739.jpg er daily driving, and going off-road feels so much more amazing. Especially at slower speeds. Body roll and cornering doesn't seem to be affected, but I am running my sway bar. I'm curious to see how these springs settle over the next couple thousand miles, but I am absolutely happy doing this. I believe the old coils had around 1.5 to 2 inches of preload.

Seriously, if you aren't happy with the icons, try a longer and softer spring. I bet you'll be surprised! I'll throw some photos of that the coils look like on the truck!

Kind of an old thread now but what was your spring rate with the original coils?

Looking at the coil serial number. 650lb originally on there.

Mine have 700lb coils but are 14in springs I loosened up the preload 2 turns and that made it significantly better. But I havent been able to offroad with them yet.

Edit: my tacoma is a double V6 with bumpers sliders and a winch. I previously had bilsteins with 620lb coils on them and the spring rate felt good. So im curious about these king coils. But I really need to go put these icons through some rough stuff before I do anything.
