With nothing in regards to the OP or his own problem/install whatever....how do you people not see an issue with Icon simply putting their faulty design on the customer? OEM REPLACEMENT WITH NO CUTTING is not something I purchase with the intention of "notching" my shock buckets. Sorry, that's false/shitty advertising.

I remember some threads going around about either Fox or King needing to grind some of the lower shock mount down for the eyelet to fit. It was suppose to be an OEM replacement and wasn't in the install instructions. There was a lot of bitching about it, too. Good part of that was, the shock couldn't fail from improper install because you couldn't even install it and break something. guess that made it acceptable and people got over it?

I would've complained about my King's if that was an issue, but mine fit perfectly.

If th OP did not recieve proper instructions then ICON is accountable. If ICON sent the instructions but it did. It state to "notch" then they are responsible also. I'm sure it doesn't cost them thousands of dollars to make or hundreds to rebuild one. I have icon CDC on my 97 4Runner. Top of the line for 3rd gen. You would think, after spending 3k on just shocks that they would have tested their product to the fullest. Including a 4Runner with bigger tires and 3" inch. Basically test their product with a set up that 99% community rubs. With that said, on full flex. My 285/75/16 tires rub my rear resi that is mounted on the outside of the frame. ( according to the instructions that's where it has to be mounted ) they rub so bad that one side bent the mounting plate that holds the resi. Who the fuck wants to worry about ripping of your resi "expensive shock" when off roading ? When you start paying for a high end product you expect a product that has. Even tested, and has no issues. Now I have to worry about my resi being rubbed, the turn knob getting rubbed. It's bullshit. Simple and plain.

And there's nothing wrong with what OP is saying or doing here. Basically we should keep our mouths shut about every company ? If it's bad or good review. This is a forum. A social area. I say icon needs to shit or get of the toilet. Man up fix your instructions and help a customer out.

I think the main issue here isn't that there needs to be minor grinding. It is that Icon is being a dick as far as customer service in dealing with the issue.

Sometimes mounts change unexpectedly because Toyota changes something slightly in a model year. For a little while OME Nitros weren't fitting on some 2015 trucks because the lower shock mount changed slightly. Perhaps exact problem you remember with Fox/King and the lower shock mount. And what happened was OME and their vendors happily took back the shocks that wouldn't fit and figured out how to modify their product to fit. As you say, this is a less insidious problem because you discover the problem on install. In Icon's case you discover the problem when their component fails.

So at some point Icon discovered they were having failures due to interference. Is this a new thing on just recent model years? Icon is silent. What did Icon do to resolve the problem? Well for now they modified their instructions. Seems reasonable to me on its own going forward.

But there are two big problems:
    • They still advertise their kit as "no cut" when in fact they now have instructions that require cutting and deny warranty claims from people who didn't cut.
    • When someone has a problem rather than demonstrating goodwill and realizing the source of the problem is really with the Icon design instead they go all pedantic on the customer and deny the claim.
Well two can play the pedantic asshole game and so if Icon wants to go that route then throw their "no cut" advertising back in their face. When a vendor decides to be a dick about something then they are deciding and in this case PUBLICLY DECLARING that their business model is short sighted cost cutting rather than serving their customers. It is an idiotic path for a company to take - especially publicly in a forum - but so far that is what they have decided to do.

But give them time, they can still come around and make things right. Everyone and every company screws things up from time to time. The question is what do they do about it.

And so back to @Icon_Madison as to what Icon thinks is the wise customer service and business play here...

would you care to explain how calling a company out on advertising something as "OEM REPLACEMENT NO CUTTING" falsely is being whiny?

Because they provided instructions with it? Im pretty sure they just call it 'factory replacement' which implies the same geometry, and the same mounting locations, but not necessarily that no changes will have to be made to fit them. But with that being said, you wouldnt have to cut anything to install Fox shocks ;)

In fact, it says "OE factory type fitment" which is even more vague than I thought at first

Problem is at this very second their website proudly declares "no cutting" (or drilling for that matter, which is also false for the remote resis which do require drilling the frame).

Again, I don't have any real issue with their new instructions. Actually glad they go out of their way to highlight the issue in the instructions to prevent failures. But they need to change their advertising copy and they should demonstrate goodwill to folks like the OP who were caught in the middle of the change to the instructions.

I stand corrected, that is a different kit than what I was looking at at first. However, to be fair you wouldnt have to cut anything for the INSTALL, just to be able to safely DRIVE it

Yeah so the moral of the story is that Icon suspension, when installed as directed, is useless. LOL I hope somebody from Icon is lurking on this one

They also use the word "sand" in their install instructions to try to cover their asses. I'm sorry, that's more than sanding. I could not accomplish that "notch" with some household sandpaper.

Thats actually pretty funny, I've gotta give it to them. I'd call them up and tell them to sand off a square inch of steel frame
