Word to the wise with Icon resis: check the fittings before you install. One of my brand new 2.5s had a finger-tight fitting out of the box. This is what it looked like on the truck on install day. Yep, that is a puddle of shock oil. Put my non-resi 2.0s back on temporarily. Not good, Icon.

Any info from Icon on how notching the bucket would have prevented your leaks?

I installed my Icons in 10/15. I don't specifically recall if there was notching mentioned in the instructions provided, but I actually kept them and can reference later tonight when I get home (I keep all truck related parts/paperwork/receipts in a file for documentation purposes such as these). Two months later my driver's side rear shock started leaking. It wasn't at the resi hose fitting like mentioned by OP, but mine was at the shaft seal. The leak wasn't immediately apparent because the rubber boot that is included with some shocks was covering up any signs of fluid. It wasn't until I started noticing spots in my driveway that I traced it back to the shaft seal. Called Icon and they repaired under warranty and all it cost me was wrench time and the $10 to ship them (they paid return shipping, but not to get the shocks to them).
    Pain in the ass?
Sure. Especially considering they were brand new, supposedly "high-end" shocks.
    Lousy customer service?
Not really. They took care of it right away and got the shocks back to me in a couple days.
As mentioned though, my malfunction was a different scenario than what the Captain has going on and was clearly a manufacturer defect. It is possible that Icon was made aware of these problems due to repeated calls for service and quietly started adding the "notching" in their instructions to cover their asses. From a company's standpoint it makes sense to keep your "oops" quiet and now make it the customer's problem if they don't follow the included install directions, rather than try and issue a recall or possibly eat the cost of multiple people trying to sneak in free rebuilds once they made their customer base aware. Maybe not the best business practice to keep your customers loyal, but financially it makes sense.

Apparently you have to notch it so the resi fittings wont rub. Cut your truck for a stock replacement shock? I'm glad I went FOX. Again, seems like ICON should have just resolved the problem and have a happy customer.

Had a similar mishap on a set of Fox's that I helped install. When maneuvering the reservoir in place, the fitting rotated a 1/4 turn, but luckily no oil escaped. A quick tightening and checking the other fittings revealed that was the only one that got through QC. A good thing to look out for if anyone is doing an install from any manufacturer. Human error will get you every time.

I chose to deal with it myself locally and sent a message to the vendor I bought from. I suggested that they reach out to Icon to relay the concern, figuring that a reseller would have more pull than an individual customer. You are correct about human error. Pain in the ass. Happy now.

I'd ask for an explanation. Share this pic with them if they don't provide an adequate responses and let them know TacomaWorld is very curious why they seem to have some recurring QC issues and shitty customer service :boink:

@GHOST SHIP, I'd call that mediocre customer service at best. Excellent customer service would be shipping you a replacement so you didn't have down time. Acceptable customer service would be refunding your shipping costs.

For the record, they did offer to have me bring the shock in person and have me back on the road the same day, but avoiding the 45 min one-way drive was worth the $10 for me.

    6. Sand the upper shock mount as shown to provide extra clearance for the hose fitting. This must be done to keep the fitting from hitting the upper mount as the bushings move during normal use.
    7. The hose must exit as pictured. [FIGURE 2] Allowing the reservoir hose to exit differently OR over tightening of the stem bushing lock nut will cause the reservoir fitting to collide into the frame. [FIGURE 3] displays contact of the reservoir fitting and the frame when the shock is installed incorrectly.

If the fittings made contact with the shock mount, makes sense that they wouldn't warranty that. The instructions are pretty clear.

I'm pretty sure my install and purchase was before the revised Instructions. Waiting for my guy to respond

I guess this is not an issue with King or Fox because they use a different fitting on the hose.

not disputing if it was clear. He is saying that those were revised instructions and not in the box at the time of install. The instructions posted online are clearly a revised version.

Let me share a good customer service story: I had FOX 2.5 resi installed. The ride was real rough and i hated it. I drove around with it for a while to see if they would settle. After 7 months or so I called FOX and explained that i wasnt happy with the ride and wanted to see how much a revalve would be. They told me that they would do a 1 time valve for FREE. yes FREE. They paid for shipping there and back. When I got them back they still were a bit too stiff. A rep from FOX called me a few days later and ask how the shocks were. I told him they still were a bit stiff but I was ok with it. They again offered to adjust the valving. I declined because off road the shocks were amazing. Seems like ICON can learn something from FOX.

I installed a set of ICONs a little over a year ago and did not like how the fitting was close to the stock shock bracket. I trimmed it and it was no big deal. In January I installed another set and when I looked at the instructions and was amazed that it was specified to notch it. Notch took about 3 seconds and I never had to worry about it.
