one of my rear Icons was also faded just outside of JT in the Mojave:

as other have mentioned, just need to turn the shock body out so that the hose does not clank on the mount.

so as far as rebuilding goes, DSM just quoted $150 per corner. Rock and Road in NorCal estimates about $130 per corner. where else could you get good work done for a fair price? ahem, someone start a thread on this...

Thanks, would still need the recharge/refill and notch the mount, right?

i don't think the notch is necessary if you angle the RR hose out. i'm going to try and fit it in there so that the hose does not hit. if not, :sawzall:

definitely need nitrogen and new oil. shocks had over 40,000 miles so service is due anyway.

Anyone know anything about Accutune Off-Road? Much closer to me than DC in San Dimas.

Is grinding the mount abosolutely necessary? Anyone running these just with the hose angled out so its not hitting the mount?

Or is grinding down the mount just the way to go? Would this be an issue if I switched to Kings down the road?

It really depends on the installation and the truck. I'm sure on some trucks it is just fine without grinding but probably safer just to do it.

Grinding down the mount takes just a few minutes, you can use a regular drill with a flap wheel if you don't have a grinder. It removes a tiny bit of metal from a quite sturdy bucket and won't impact mounting another brand of shock later.

Not "necessary", but every truck is slightly different. I don't have my buckets notched and a few other guys I know don't either and no problems there. But if your shocks are close (remembering that as your suspension cycles, the shocks may rotate slightly), then I'd suggest notching them. The small amount required to notch won't affect the integrity of the mount or mounting kings in the future if you decide to got that route.

I’m sending my front icons to accutune, I think Ryan the one I spoke with used to work for Icon. I could be wrong but he’s referenced that he started his career with digressive pistons and that’s what Icon uses. But they seem fully capable of rebuilding my icons.

I used him for both my shocks, rear fox dsc and front fox dsc. super awesome guy to work with. Also still need to plan a custom tuning session out in the desert with them to really dial in the shocks.

A lot of people starting with suspension mods are looking for purely bolt in parts since they likely don't have a grinder and have never used one. Another issue is those same people don't understand how much components move and shift around as the axle articulates. For guys who offroad and do their own work, yeah it's common sense, but not everyone has the same level of experience and knowledge. A lot of these parts are sold as "bolt in" when they aren't, that's either a marketing fail or an engineering failure on the companies part.

Someone figured out a way to get self-notching buckets.
