We had a Touareg TDI, weighed like 5000 lbs and rated horsepower was only 225 HP, but 400 ft-lb or torque. That thing had effortless 60-80 MPH passing capability, since you didn't need to wait for a downshift followed by waiting for the engine to rev up like in a gas engine; just stomp the accelerator and max HP is delivered at low RPMs. It also didn't care if it was towing; MPG and acceleration seemed about the same. In 80k miles it used like $50 worth of DEF and had one emissions sensor replaced under warranty. Averaged 27 MPG.

Truck duty cycles really are best-suited to diesels, with turbo gas engines being a close second. I'll take a good n/a engine (Chevy small block, Porsche flat 6, etc) in a sports car, but that's about it.

As much as all Taco owners want to see a diesel Taco,Toyota will still not make it.

    Why?

    CAFE regulations/standards.
Current V6 is faster than the Twins Diesel.
Who tows heavy loads with a mid-sized truck?

In all reality, if we were to get a Diesel, it would be more expensive than a Full size pickup that tows and hauls better. *cough* $40k Colorado Diesel *cough*. Why I laugh at when I see the 0-60 times. The Twisels can't hit 60mph over a course of 30 seconds.

You don't get a diesel to drag race. You get it for longevity, fuel mileage, and capability. A midsize diesel truck will last a really long time, handle heavier loads without putting as much strain on the vehicle and get you 30 mpgs. Trust me, they wouldn't make it if it wasn't in demand. People have been begging for these for years. In time, Toyota will too. They are followers.

As for the price, full size mostly base model truck will get you the 40k price tag. Pretty loaded midsize diesel for 40k. The buyer must decide what size vehicle works better for their daily habits, garage, etc. At least with GM they give you the choice to make.

Lol people are paying near 40k now for a well equipped Tacoma without a diesel. 9 seconds isn't fast, but it is far from 30 seconds. And why not in a truck that is built for offroad? Wouldn't low end torque be more useful than the near red line peak torque of the v6 in offroading? Its not for drag racing, it is for offroading. As for CAFE regulations/standards, gm has done it, Nissan has done it, there is no reason Toyota can't do it. Towing more would just be an added benefit. Plus around 30 mpg or better, and no constant downshifting when you come to a slight incline. I would pay pro money for an offroad version with a diesel in it. I am not saying get rid of the v6, I am simply saying let diesel be an option with the manual, which no other company will offer (An automatic trans without a dipstick to check the fluid is stupid).

It is going to be interesting to watch and see what happens . it would not really be credible news if not for Trump, that it is even coming soon.
From what I read in the past , Ford is worried about a Ranger taking sales away from the F150 and thereby loosing the 39 year record for top selling truck . I wonder when GM combines Chevy and GMC models by eliminating one or the other to mess with this also. I thought for sure they would have done it when they dumped Oldsmobile , Saturn , and Pontiac during the bailout fiasco. I cannot see them selling a new ranger for much less than a comparable F150 . because all the money is made with the trucks and bigger SUVs .

The Canyon and Colorado may have taken a few sales away from Silverado/Sierra but overall, GM truck sales are up. Ford may sell more F-150s than any other single truck model in America. But GM sells more trucks overall than Ford (or anyone else). Something maybe GM should throw in some commercials once in awhile to knock Ford down a peg or 2 with their chest puffing commercials.

F-150 is a good truck but the problem is everyone and their dog has one.

I hear all of your points. But Toyota is not going to spend a couple of millions to drop an existing diesel and add an exhaust after treatment just to sell a few thousand trucks.

In this forum full of people, who truly understand vehicles and the usefulness of a diesel engine, would really appreciate such a configuration.

Unfortunately we are a very small percentage.

This is one of the reasons why Toyota dropped the single cab and made all the Tacoma suspensions the same. They didn't want to complicate their lean manufacturing process. Adding a third engine to production would result in slower manufacturing output and drive up price tags to make up for the lost opportunity cost.

Why do you think we are not seeing the twisels out as fleet vehicles? Because of the huge price tag. In the long run, ~200k miles, you would be making a profit of buying a diesel. Until then you have to deal with repair time when cleaning/replacing injectors, worrying about government emission standards and a whole boat load of other problems.

In America, the 2.7L access cab SR is going to be there fleet standard along with the Nissan Frontier 4 banger. Simple, reliable, just oil changes, gas and tires is what all business are looking for when they need workers from point A to point B.

Just my two cents brother. :)

Just FYI Ford will have the option of putting a Diesel in the Ranger/Bronco if they choose. They already have their small Diesel over here in North America doing very well in the Transit full sized van. No additional work would be necessary to drop it into a truck. In fact, my source who owns several Ford dealerships says that the reason the small Diesel is not in an F150 is because it's just the right size for the Ranger so that is Fords plan. They will only offer the I4 gas engine in the base work truck. It looks like everything else will get the I4 Ecoboost or a small Diesel.

I don't think fleet sales factor into this discussion in any relevant way; fleet buyers make decisions based on 100% rational metrics, but the consumer truck market makes largely irrational buying decisions (buying a fullsize 4x4 to commute solo and never tow/haul, buying a 4x4 off road trim and never going off road, etc). Consumer diesel truck buyers are probably the least rational consumers on the planet (see the 'rolling coal' morons), but their money is no less green.

There is demand for midsize diesel trucks. That demand is largely irrational, but that never stopped automakers from attempting to satisfy demand.

Right now, but I think in a couple years Toyota is going to have to do something, the new ranger and frontier are going to take a good chunk of Toyota's market. Plus a couple million is pocket change to a corporation like Toyota. One can dream that the factory expansion is secretly for a diesel option lol. With these mpg standards that car companies will have to achieve in the next decades, they are going to have to turn to diesel or electric.

How is more mpg, and low end torque for a midsized offroad truck irrational?

Gas turbo will be a viable option beyond Diesel, especially on a hybrid system. The problem with Diesels is that, under current EPA regulations, they don't drive the way Americans expect. Ford did a pile of research to figure out what people preferred, turbo gas or turbo diesels... they went with the Ecoboost development.

Make no mistake though, they didn't put all their eggs in the one basket but for now turbo gas seems the likely answer to keep posting those sexy numbers people like and meet the EPA restrictions.

Literally you can tell how someone drives by putting them in an ecoboost truck for a few days lol. I know guys who get 20 mpg with the 3.5 and guys who get 12 mpg with the 3.5 in the exact same truck. Turbo gas trucks get good mileage when babied, but if you stomp on them they just dump that gas like you wouldn't believe. The results speak for themselves both ways.

No GM for me because bailout. I'm pro-Ford as long as Toyota doesn't offer the vehicle I need or want.

True, and it's prevalent here in TW too. I suspect many of those here who complained about horrible fuel mileage are leadfooters or just bad drivers. I'm guilty of having a leadfoot sometimes hence I don't complain about bad fuel mileage, otherwise I should drive a Prius

So you hate GM because they were bailed out but ignore Chrysler's bailout and the multiple times Ford has been "bailed out" with huge government loans or looking the other directions on what should have been monumental recalls on vehicles catching fire in accidents or just driving down the road. Ironic...

Very true, but people are not buying them to baby it all the time to get 20 mpg. Diesel lets you get on it and have good fuel economy at the same time, in my experience its far more forgiving. But that is just me, I rather have more torque then horsepower.
