ID these parts behind timechain cover

    Can you ID these three rather interesting parts that are behind the timing chain cover?

    1. The bigger sprocket on the crankshaft, dead center in the picture, the smaller powers the timing chain. It does not power anything yet it has teeth. Not sure it is really a sprocket then, is it?

    2. The little L-shaped protruding stud, or whatever you call it, right above it. It does not move. What does it do?

    3. The actuator next to the sprocket.

    Here is my WILD GUESS of what 1 and 3 are... Parts of VVT -- the actuator cocks the sprocket in its portion that doesn't have teeth, which retards the motion of the smaller sprocket that moves the camshafts. Laugh at it if this guess is wrong

    does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
    I'm going to guess large sprocket is crank position sensor and sensor attached, the L shaped stud is a oil squirter.

    that makes perfect sense. i didn't check if it was actually a tube, just assumed it's a solid L, like an allen wrench, which really would not make any sense.

    Spot on.

    You are going to want to remove the studs for reassembly of the cover, or drop the bottom (PITA), otherwise you will have a tough time getting the cover back on with the oil pump o ring, and not loose all of the FIPG when sliding the cover on . . . and end up with leaks. Ask me how I know.

    Correct. I didn't do this, but reaped the problems I described above and had to drop the pan. This was suggested to me after the fact by a master tech.

    why couldn't you just guide the cover over the studs ?

    That sprocket is actually on the crankshaft.

    You can, and you will scrap the FIPG off the bottom mating surface, and likely slide the oil pump o ring off as well, and then . . . leak.

    OK, makes sense. What is the name for driver bits that are like reverse torx (torx being male and the driver bit to undo this needing to be female) ?

    I believe a 6mm 6 point socket will be a close enough size to remove the studs. They aren't in very tight. That is how I remove mine.

    Definitely remove those studs prior to re-installation. Also, once timing is set, turn the crank so that the sprocket is level. Then adjust the oil pump gear, in the timing cover, so that it is level and matches the crank's sprocket. Otherwise you be fighting it forever.

    Large sprocket is called the crank trigger wheel. The sensor is to the right of it in the photo.

    So it is not an actuator like i thought but a sensor that reports to the ECU where the crank is in its revolution cycle, correct ?

    Be gentle, and if you cannot remove the stud with a 6mm, then definitely get this^^^
