In the Army the SF is basically open to try. You can try to enlist as an 18X and you are basically enlisting as an SF personnel. One of the hardest parts of becoming SF is passing through Selection which is a 1 month long grueling trial of what you are willing to do and how you perform in various situations. Lots of guys fail selection due to breaking legs. You can complete the course and instructors can still turn you down just because they don't feel like you have what it takes to be SF. If you pass selection you then do almost a year of SF general training. That covers all of the general stuff involved in SF from the history to combat to surviving capture. After that you do your specific job training. You don't get to choose what you do, but you can sometimes influence it a little. There are weapons specialists, combat engineers, medics, communications, and intelligence. The school for those jobs can be another year on top of the year you just did. After that you have just a few short things to do and you are assigned to an ODA team. The downsides is ODA teams are "deployed" 6 months out of the year, every year. Each SF unit covers a region in the world (usually a continent) and will spend 6 months at of the year doing stuff in that region, unless they land in Afghanistan or Iraq for that 6 month rotation.

I worked with 2 ODA teams in Iraq. The first one's region was Africa and they had some cool stories about the wildlife there. The second one's region was the middle east and they had some cool stories about doing missions in Yeman and Pakistan and stuff.

We had a few different photographers on base with us that were assigned to the SF teams. Each team had one assigned and they would go out with them on every mission and take photos, so it can be a pretty sketchy job sometimes. One guy was in the Navy and the other one was National Guard from Cali I think.

They both said they are almost impossible jobs to get, because there are so few slots and the people that have the job already aren't giving it up.

 

Like Scocar said, he'll either realize the Army isn't what he thinks it is and lose interest or get broken at selection if he makes it that far. haha

 

you gotta be smart as shit to go SF, as well as rugged as a motherfucker.

Yep. Most of the SF guys I met spoke Arabic or Russian. haha Most of the members on the team based in the Middle East spoke Arabic. They wouldn't tell the interpreters though. They would just take them along like usual and would see how well they translated and whether or not they were lazy about their translations and such. They ended up firing like half of them. haha

 

Well in the Marines and air force you can't just become SF. You could but that doesn't mean you will become an operator. In most cases you are chosen. Of course you could just go seal if you want hardcore

but after learning what they actually do and go through, fuck that. haha

I don't recall them ever talking about that. More specifically the surviving as a POW scenarios they go through. Let's just say, they are very realistic. haha

 

Sere is not as bad as people think it is. It's bad, don't get me wrong but it gets played up a lot

 

basically everything i've ever heard about SF SERE sucks to where my level of "fuck that shit" skyrockets

my dick would feel massive wearing that green beret though.

 

The SF guys did 2-3 week long SERE courses that were far far above anything I have ever done. They literally held them captive and starved them and isolated them, beat the shit out of them, crammed them into small boxes for long periods of time etc. They said it was so realistic that by the end, when the instructors were congratulating them for completing the course they had a hard time even being near them and typically were pretty flinchy. haha They said it was really crazy to have somebody beating the shit out of you for 2 weeks and then one day they set you free and are nice to you and back on your side. haha
