Oh nice! I thought that ring gear looked bigger than 9" next to the 8". And I figured it would be custom to what you want, that's why I asked :D

Oh and that would be 1" to each side (not sure if you meant that or were saying 1" total). 2nd gen Tacos are 65" wide. 1st gen Tundras are 66" wide.

It's possible my tape measure lied to me, but I'm pretty sure it's 66". I'll double check this weekend when I pull the third to sell it.

Hmmm... Well I've never actually measured myself, but everything I have ever read has been 65" for the 2nd gen Taco and 66" for the 1st gen Tundra.

So what was your reasoning for going with the LC rear instead of a 9"? I'm sure the 9" is plenty strong for what you do. Hell it is plenty strong for what most anyone does. haha

I don't believe that to be true. Most guys say they are fine for tire sizes up to 37"...but most people don't abuse their shit like us. It also cost a lot more to build a full floater 9" with all the goodies to make it strong enough, and the lockers are considerably smaller, and weaker, for the 9" vs the 9.5". The lockers for the 9.5" are about the same size as Dana 60 stuff. In fact a D60 has a 9.75" ring gear. I get almost the same strength, with half the weight and the same ground clearance as the 8"...oh and an E-brake. Couldn't have an E-brake with a 9" disk conversion. At least not without hillbilly engineering something. Also the pinion length is exactly the same on the 9.5" vs the 8", so I can keep my factory drive line. Can't do that with a 9"...

I see. Don't most of the KOH rigs run 9's with 40's though? I know Shannon is running a 9" currie up front.

Also, I was talking with Joe at Moab and I'm pretty sure he had said they had or know of an Ultra4 buggy running 40's on a just plain jane 9" without issue. Granted that buggy might be a bit lighter than you (not sure what they weigh). They have a volkswagen they are building up for Ultra4 as well, but it is getting 14bolts under it front and rear, which seems like overkill to me for just 40's...

All that is noted though! When the time comes I guess I should look into a 9.5" instead of a 9".

Pretty sure my ego hurts more than anything. I'm headed up to get my gear that salvageable this weekend. Now I'm looking at second gens. :p I'm a pretty optimistic guy. The only thing I'll be out is the suspension and bumper. Live and learn.

True, lots of KOH rigs run niners. Lots of KOH rigs DNF too...

Of course, a $10K 9" built with all the right parts is going to be tough. Tougher than a stock Dana 60. A well built car will use U-joints as the "fuse" that breaks before anything else. That's why you see spare driveshafts strapped on KOH and desert rigs... That's my plan. I just have to make the rear end stronger than a 1310 Spicer U joint. I think the most affordable way to do that, and gain better brakes, and easier maintenance of a full floating axle, is the LC 9.5". I'll let you know if I'm right in about a month. :D

    9" lockers are pretty small...

    I'll be waiting :D haha

Is the 9.5 more money than a 9 or about the same? At least for what you plan for. Like for your end result, is it cheaper going with the 9.5?

Also are you doing an ARB or can you run an elocker with that diamond housing? I'm guessing you're doing an ARB since you don't like electronics.

I'm going to run a detroit locker in it. I hate mashing buttons when I'm driving. The only thing I like mashing is the skinny pedal. I could have built a semi-float 9" with a "heavy duty" stock style housing with a cheap set of brakes on it for this price, but then I would have to buy a new drive shaft. For the same features in a 9" it would be quickly approaching ten grand. I got the 9.5 built for less than half that. I'm even saving on shipping and driving to Colorado to pick it up.
