This also is true..also coming to realize I dont have stock gearing...

I dont think the previous owner even knew this...

 

in all honesty it might not even be a bearing in the diff could be a wheel bearing or a bearing in the transfercase that eco's down the drive line. that's why I said play with it. what speed does the the noise happen? on excel decel or what? does it change when truning right or left? need to know these things.

 

No change when turning..just when accelerating..doesnt seem like their is any noise on decel at all.

 

Mine would make noise on decel if I downshifted. If I just let off the throttle and kept it in drive it would make noise, but it was pretty quiet and hard to notice. If I put it in neutral the noise completely disappeared and if I down shifted it got much louder. It was also pretty loud under accel.

 

See that sounds like what I have, but if there is any decel noise its very minimal, almost impossible to hear. Sounds more like the noise you would hear gearing down from higher speed as it slows. No noise in neutral at all, loud under higher speeds when accelerating.

 

well thus far im back to thinking it's a gear set up issue or a side bearing issue. there's a rare chance you could have a warped housing causing problems but who knows.

 

Well if the ring gear and pinion have been checked and changed multiple times already that would somewhat indicate that that wouldnt be the issue, wouldn't ya say?

Unless the locker itself is faulty.

Haven't had any real opportunity to fully test it out.

it's not he locker. and I guess it depends on who was setting up the gears or if the housing is warped like I was saying.

silly 8" rear ends anyways.

 

My factory ring and pinion blew up on me and I had it fixed under warranty by a local mechanic since I was over 60 miles from a delaership at the time. They made his use all Toyota OEM parts and I got about 800 miles on it before it started making the noises. After putting it on jackstands and confirming the noise was coming from the rear diff; Brant and I pulled it and found a small chip in the ring gear (though it was on the edge and didn't come in contact with the set pinion pattern so I don't think it was causing the noise). After finding that I just said fuck it and ordered an already set up third from ECGS so I got a different third and it has been fine for the last 15K miles now. Because of that I never did find out exactly what was making the noise but we suspected the pinion bearing because fuck crush washers... My ECGS diff uses a solid spacer.

 

Well shit I hope its not that.

Hopefully my buddy gets back to me about using his jacks to lift the girl up...see if i cant get to the bottom of this. I just want to find out what it is before something bad happens lol

Someone mentioned that there was 4 bearings I should double check as well?

yeah two pinion bearings one big one and a little one and then carrier bearings both will be the same size. inner and outer bearing need to be looked at with a fine tooth comb. anything that looks like a pit in any part of the bearing and it's junk.
