My truck needs a new catalytic converter. The original one was stolen off the truck before I bought it and replaced with an aftermarket CAT, turns out after market is usually shit and/or Toyotas are finicky about that stuff. They told me 2k to install a factory cat back on.. Right...Cause that's going to happen.

 

Is it throwing a code?

Yeah I caught it in your Travel Log. Pretty badass pic with the RTT on the back! Jumping with my 5100's were usually always hard landings. Add in a lot of suspension (I'm running my ORI's valved almost as stiff as they go) and it gets a lot better. OME's and 5100's are valved pretty softly compared to what most of the LT guys are running.

 

There's both where I'm at too. Whenever my rear cat died, I put in a URD simulator and everything was gravy again. It only works whenever there is a working O2 sensor though. Once the sensor died I put in a new aftermarket cat and sensor since there were holes in the midpipe and I don't really enjoy exhaust fumes right underneath the cab haha.

@Tacoma.Gal Basically as long as the emissions test is just looking for a CEL, the cheap sensor is way better to buy than a new cat, especially a Toyota cat.

Almost every jump I hage done is 30mph or less. It doesn't take much speed to fly!

 

Not sure what I'm going to do about my CAT situation at this point, the CEL is currently off so we'll see how long that last. I may end up just registering my truck in a different county.. Baha.

My brother found a CAT on summit racing that has a 25k mi "emissions" warranty. I'm not too worried about it, he works for Toyota so I'm sure something will get figured out. I have until July before I have to get emissions checked.

 

Not quite the same, but the cat on my wife's car died and had to be replaced. Took it to a shop I trust, and the out the door cost from diagnosis to completion was about $250. This was on a VW Jetta too. If somebody told me $2000 for cat change on my truck, I'd tell them to get bent.

 

Well he told me the part itself (CAT) was $1,200, and my brother who works as a service writer at Toyota can get me a factory cat for $900 so the shop wasn't too far off with their pricing.. Gotta make money.. The shop I took it to will also only use factory parts and they said since the aftermarket CAT that is on there is welded on there was more than usual labor involved. Still, not going to happen.

 

Do they put a sniffer in the exhaust like they do in Cali, or is it just checking to see if the CEL is on?

 

any last minute suggestions you guys would do before embarking on a 3500 mile road trip? Diff, oil, trans, brakes, steering was done a few months ago, belts look fine, getting it aligned...checked suspension nuts and bolts...
