Does your state require a permit for a street legal truck to do offroading?

 

Is this even a real question?

 

Yep, some states do and some states don't. Some states are easy to find answers and some are not. Much easier to post in here to get answers than doing research on a bunch of states and all their laws

 

I'm just on the Washington side of things and I've never needed a permit. I haven't been through Idaho, but I've never seen anybody say they need a permit either. Now in WA, there are some places that require a pass to go into, but those places also gave a daily pay option as well. The pass is a WA Discovery Pass. Chances are you won't need it.

Is anything on here real? You didn't take the red pill today...

 

I wasn't trying to be arrogant. I've just never heard of such a thing. Being as it is Idaho, I don't think one is needed, I've never heard of one being needed/used.

 

No worries, some states are a pain in the butt. Like Texas, we have to have them and you can't do it online. You have to go to a store that sells them or do it direct via phone which is not an option when your overseas. I had to email about a dozen stores before I found one that would mail me one and pay online.

Some states are not clear about OHV stickers for street legal vehicles, you sear it and it takes you to the site but only talks about, custom offroad trucks, ATV dirt bikes and snowmobiles but doesn't say anything about street legal rigs being good with no stickers.

As the post above said, some specific areas require permits and a state permit (if required) does not cover it. I would rather be safe and have permits than risk a federal fine on federal land.

 

You only need the pass if your stopping to camp or something. If your just driving through or riding trails you don't need one.

 

Sluggo is kicking some serious ass. Just truckin along nicely! Texas has been my favorite place so far. Love that state. 10 minutes into Louisiana and we see a damn swamp shack/trailer off the highway and we both look at each other and conclude we will probably die on this state

 

So camping overnight on trails requires a permit? Where do you get those?

I am now trying to plan the next leg of my trip.

You can try the gospels near graingville. There a ton of trails in boise and nampa.

 

Its only in discover pass required areas, I cant remember if its on DNR or what mainly because I don't care. I spend enough money in this bullshit state and now they go and add another tax for me to access the mountains which I already pay for. Haha I've never bought one but I've been screwed with plenty.

 

In Wa it is a convoluted mess.

As I understand it, just driving on DNR/state managed land (off pavement) does not require a pass until you stop. If you stop for any reason, then you are required to have a Discover Pass.

Driving and stopping on Federally manged land requires no pass. Only parking at established trailheads or camp grounds requires a pass on federal land.

The challenging part for recreationists and enforcement is knowing whose managing the land you are on. It isn't always obvious when you go from one enforcement area to the other. And many roads and trails go through DNR land to get to national park access.
