I'm considering moving to Boise. Forest Service job at the fire center. How bad does commuting suck? Lots of crackheads/crime? I live in a small town now, not a city boy by any means but I like the outdoor recreation and freedom offered in the rest of the state. Most of my experience in Boise is passing through or fighting traffic for some event, never really spent much time there.

I dont think theres anywhere you can really get away from that garbage...Nice thing about that area is you are close to the mountains or lots of desert to go on trails that go for miles...

How intrusive is the emissions test? I don't have cats on my Landcruiser and the duramax is turned up to 11.

Edit: Did some reading and I'm hosed. It would cost me a lot of cheddar at the exhaust shop to move there. Fork it.

3 rigs and my motorcycle are all straight piped. I don't know if my SS would pass with cats lol. Thanks for the info. I think I'll decline the job. I'm looking for more freedom, not less. Also the home prices are kind of ridiculous if you want some acreage.

Being from Oregon personally, I’d urge you to research some more. After leaving Oregon, I’ll never move back.

What’s better over there? Tax wise it’s about the same, hunting and fishing a little better, house cost more, etc. sell it to me man lol

I moved over here in 2014 and have zero regrets. Tax wise it's close, hunting is better here, I'd say fishing is better in Oregon. House cost depends on where you are really, I moved from Oregon City. A 1400sqft house there right now is about 380k without acreage. Here, we found the same house size wise with a backyard like a park for 219k. I'm sure looking for acreage is a little more pricey. However, coming from Pendleton, you're going to see a rise in price moving to Boise. I'd say Pendleton is more like a mix of Mountain home and maybe Twin Falls, which don't require smog tests BTW. Ada County is one of the few that do I believe. Like said above, the mountains are 20 minutes from you as well.

Not to mention the people that I don't have to deal with from Portlandia anymore conducting naked bike rides. Unless you're into that....

The mountains are what I'm most interested in! The public land in general. Pendleton is cool, about the same distance to the woods, but this time of year the snow is deeper than I am tall and its a loooong way to the desert. I'm stuck on an island of dry land wheat fields all winter. It would be nice to head south from Boise and be on BLM land in under an hour. I'd be working on the south end of town near the airport, so maybe buying a house down that way would be cheaper and less traffic. The job would be 100 times better for me, they keep trying to kill me at this one. I work on remote mountain top sites now, usually alone. That gets old by about the third time I bury a sled neck deep each season. 9 people died in avalanches in several incidents where I work. Like I was parked exactly where two of them got nailed the day before it happened, so a desk job would be rad. We'll see what they offer me...and I'll keep looking at real estate. The smog thing is BS though! Ha

The house we bought is actually on the east end of Boise, 5 minutes from the airport. There’s little to no traffic on this side. That job sounds nuts man lol no thank you

Have you looked up here in North Idaho. Tons of public land hunting fishing etc., Dont know what your job is but sounds crazy. Theres a property coming up for sale soon here, 285K 8acres with a pond. road is kind of a mess in winter but thats only a few months of the year. The closer you get to CDA the more expensive you get.

I work for the government as a Radar and radio tech climbing towers in the middle of nowhere fixing microwave radios and crap like that. I kind of have to be an IT guy as well these days, and that's what the Boise job is primarily. No climbing, no snow shoes or snowmobiles, no 750,000 watt radio nuking my innards.

As a desk jockey, your job looks cool.

If only Ada county requires smog check, you could look at Nampa and the surrounding area. It’s in Canyon County.

East Boise house prices have gone up in the last 4 years. South west Boise seems to still be affordable, but not with acreage.

The parts guy at Toyota was telling there are trails 15 minutes from the airport to the south east. He rides a motorcycle and said he always sees people in trucks and jeeps getting stuck out there.
