Haha. well the round case that protects the axles;) after googling it, I guess the technical term would be the rear axle housing:D

if it was brake fluid your resi would be low, have you checked it?

Didn't notice a smell... although my gear oil in the back is only about 5 months old and has about 500 miles on it. Although I have 6 qts of new gear oil sitting here next to me and that stuff has a strong smell. haha

So just how hard is it to change the seal and/or bearing?

Brake fluid level is fine, even after pumping the brakes some. It's got to be that seal or bearing...

and what exactly would cause that to go out? I haven't even drove it on the freeway for at least a week so it can't have over heated at 35mph...

That my friends is the tell tale sign of....... AN AXLE SEAL. they are kind of a pain to replace. you need to remove the tire, then the break drum and axle as once piece. you'll have to bleed the brakes once you put it all back together, just be careful not to damage the bearing surface coming out or going back in.

Would a bad bearing cause it to leak? I was noticing not too long ago that i think my taco is making a sound like the brakes are rubbing. I was going to wait until I had more time to jack it up and play with it before I talked to you guys about it though...

With less than 15,000 miles on it? Although age is probably a factor in this too...

it's possible but you certainly have a seal problem and it's the cheaper of the two to fix labor would be about .25 hours more to replace the bearing with the seal. Expect about 20 in labor and 50-75 in parts

Well it was inside the brake drums, and its still scentless as far as I can tell. The bearing doesn't make any noise when I spin it either. On a side note...:frusty: lessoned learned I hope... Do not press the brake pedal with the brake drum covers off... Did I just fuck this piston? I can't get that red thing to go back in no matter what i do...

Don't do that. Just open the bleeder on that cylinder and push it back in. Some fluid will squirt out and you should bleed the brakes after that, but I bet your mysterious oil is brake fluid and you know what that means.

Fixed!! I took the whole piston off and tore it apart. The seal on the red thing got caught and wouldn't let it go back in.

and that mean my brake piston is bad? I'm a newb...

Alright... I'm having a great Friday the 13th... How retarded can I be in one day... So I got it all put back together, bled the brake line on the drivers side since I tore that piston apart and went to check the brake fluid to add some... Remember when I said I checked the brake fluid earlier and it was fine? I checking the fucking power steering fluid!!!! I think my brain is broken... my jaw literally dropped when I realized that... as for the initial leak on the passenger side, I'm thinking it is brake fluid, cuz I took the fill bolt off of the rear diff and it dripped right away and I could smell it instantly. So bad piston on that side?

I doubt your piston is bad maybe the seal. one of the local parts places should have a rebuild kit for 20 bucks or so.
