I was reading through the Unique mods thread in the 2nd gen forum and saw a guy that put a 5th wheel hitch in his taco. Looking at the build thread for it someone posted this video:

That is a fucking expensive camera. I'm just not into photography enough for something like that. I get by just fine with the $200 samsung that i bought my gf for her last birthday. I have a similiar samsung that i bought back in 2007 but when i was using it in Iraq it wouldn't take pictures at night for some reason. It would say my hands werent steady enough and they would come out fuzzy. It used to not have that problem before. Oh well its pretty much obsolete now since the new one has better zoom and such..

 

The cool thing is if you do go with a 400mm lens it will be equal to 600 mm with your cropped sensor. Nice reach with a handheld 600 mm. Do the lenses you are considering have IS? It really does work pretty well. Seems good for 2-3 f-stops which really helps when you are off the tripod.

btw: I am impressed that you are actually reading that thick book. Those things put me to sleep. I am sure I have "features" that I have no clue how to use.

Yep but i just dont have the need for that kind of picture quality. I use a camera only a handful of times a year. Most of the pics i take now are with my droid and its picture quality is good enough for most of those pics.

Edit: for example my sig pic was taken with my droid and i think it looks fine even at its full size. The nice thing about the other cameras is better optical zoom. I dont know what the rating is on my droid but my samsung has like 8x and the girls has like 15x. A lot better for taking pictures of wild life

I'm thinking it will be quite challenge to use a 400 mm handheld. It isn't just the weight that gets you. It is very difficult to be steady enough when you are fully extended. That means you compromise on ISO and/or depth of field to be able to get the shutter speed high enough.

If you have the patience to read that manual, your patience with the tripod will pay off too.

There so many times I am to lazy to whip out the tripod. Even when I know I will wish I had when I look at the image in ps. I will bring it with to moab, we'll see how many times I actually use it.

 

Never saw the point of most filters and certainly not a UV filter. But I always shoot in RAW so I have complete control of the image in photoshop. I don't want anything filtered out of the raw image. I want all of the information to go to the sensor.

I do recognize though that opinion may be somewhat controversial.

Some people mount a clear filter to act as a sort of protection layer. The theory is it is better to scratch or break a $30 filter instead of the lense glass in case you get careless. I don't buy it. But I always have the lens cap on when I am not shooting.

Filters can also add unwanted vignetting, especially on cropped sensors. What is the filter size on that kit lens you are getting?

 

Can't really go wrong at that price I guess if it includes all of those items. The pink one is a fluorescent filter which is easy to do with ps. The polarizer I've found never works the way I want it to on the digital sensor. Something about the way the light strikes the sensor. I used to use a polarizer all the time with film, now I never use it with these camera's any more.

I may have some 58 mm filters laying around. Let me look when I get home. You are welcome to them is you want.
