    I don't see anything in that discussion that makes me think regearing isn't the way to go. I am running 33's ATM and the truck is definitely asking for gears on the pavement. It wants to downshift way to much.

    I have not tested this on the trail yet but but I have driven my friends '97 with the v6 and auto and 4.88s. On the trail that is a sweet combo.

    There is always a risk of breaking a front axle every time you get off pavement. Being locked up front definitely adds stress to the front diff and axles tho. But yes, there will be the temptation to use it if I have it. :D

    well..its like an ultra get unstuck button. When i have lockers i will never have them on unless i think im going to need it on a particular section id have the on. Otherwise they will both stay off till needed and front wont go on ever unless super needed..but ill have 35s by then anyways, so ill have to be even more ginger with tundra axles.

    I know ou guys are over the regearing chit chat but I run 33's on mine and dont go over 2K RPMS until I am at 75ish MPH. If I cruise at 65 I am just under 2K RPMS. That seems to contradict Brady's reply I think unless you are MT Brady?

    Brady's are just over 33'' since his are 255/85s and yes they are a MT.

    285's but they arent that much smaller than his. Didnt think it would be that much of a difference.

    they are slightly shorter, but yes, not much. Think yours are like 33.2 and Brady's are 33.8?? :notsure:

    but what is odd is his are like 10'' narrow and yours a 11''..and wider tires tend to bog down motors and what not much more.

    I have been known to run the TRD locker on sections of trails where it isn't always required only because I believe it doesn't hurt to have it on. This is not the case for a front locker. That would be an "only as absolutely needed" situation for several reasons. In fact, from here it would seem like it would only get turned on after an attempt is made without it.*

    For BFG's the posted numbers are:

    255/85-16 is 33.3"
    285-75-16 is 32.7"

    That still seems to me to be a small diference. Not enough to justify the difference in RPMS.

    Yeah I get that. Still, seems like a huge increase in RPMS. It is what it is I guess.

    Those are the rpms for 4.88 gears in a second gen. The factory gears match what you are saying: Just over 2K at 75mph.

    My tires are supposed to be 33.07" tall and 10.04" wide. At 60 psi I measured them at exactly 33" (granted I can't measure to that kind of tolerance with a tape measure, but it looked to be almost spot on the 33" mark).
    You're tires are supposed to be 32.83" tall and 11.22" wide. So they probably measure somewhere between 32.5" and 32.8" tall.

    Tire width won't affect your rpm at different speeds, it will just affect how hard the motor has to work to maintain that speed.

    With the factory gears I never had a lack of power by any means. I could go from 75-90+ in no time and pull hills easy, it just required a downshift just to maintain speed at times let alone accelerate at all and that raped fuel economy driving in 4th on the freeway.

    It would vary between the motors, but clearly the 4.0L doesn't make enough power at 2Krpm to handle the 75mph with oversize tires very well.

    Last year in moab i took out spiders not axle shafts so the arb is deffinatly a weak link fix. axles can be changed in about 20 min on the trail and cost $75 for a new one so yeah id much rather break axles than the diff.

    Yep. Piece of cake. Just make sure you have some spares and some extra diff gear oil:D

    Hey Konsta do you have a cool puller to get them out? Or do you do it the old fashion way with a punch and a bfh and a prybar?

    Oh my bad. I had the wrong tranny. The 1st gen 4spd autos have a 0.705:1 overdrive gear.
