I used to have a spare key stashed somewhere on my truck in case I ever lost my key or locked it inside.
What are some ideas for doing this with my new truck that has the smart key system?

Get a dumb key, and put it in a "hide-a-key" magnetic box. It'll get you in the door.

The only think I can think of is get one of the receiver hitch key safes to keep the extra fob in. Of course you'll have to take the battery out of the fob. Not sure how water tight those things are.

MT stuff, RTT stuff, the usual.
Get a no chipped key to open the door.

Use tie-wire to secure it to the frame somewhere

Do the 2016s have bed cubbies? What I did for mine was took out my cubbie, placed the fob in a ziploc bach, gorilla taped it to the side and put it back in. It's stayed watertight for about a year now. You could do something similar. For mine I have a spare hidden in my truck so I can reach under, unlock from the fob, and get my key inside.

@tombiosis - unchipped key wired to frame somewhere to get in the truck. chipped key hidden in truck. tonnes of great places to hide it. you could win eat to the underside of your seat so it doesn't hang down. Or stick it in the fuse panel in the engine bay.

But if there is a "chipped key" in the truck, anyone could walk up and open the magic door, and drive away...(I guess I could remove the battery in the key though)
    Still...seems like a complicated dilemma...

When you say chipped, do you mean the push button start key?

I took the battery out of my extra fob and put it with the battery in my console. I took the hard key that unlocks the door and glove box and put it in a magnetic box underneath. I can then get the door key out to open the truck and put the battery in the fob and I am on my way. I am going to get an extra hard key made at the dealership for less than 20 bucks and put it on my Keychain just in case the magnetic box is knocked off.

If you go looking for the magnetic box because you need it and realize its not there, won't that also mean that you don't have your keychain?

It will lock if you take the battery out of the fob.
I keep my Keychain in my pocket.

You don't have to take the battery out. You can turn the fob "off" by holding down the "lock" button and pressing "unlock" twice. The light will flash 4 times, indicating that the fob is no longer trying to communicate with the truck. I can verify that the doors will lock when the "off" fob is inside.

To reactivate the fob, press any key.

See p. 123 of the owners manual pdf.

Stow the fob under the hood, inside a waterproof box. Hide a dummy key elsewhere.

1st there is NOT a"chipped key" for the truck. They are push button start.
2nd you can NOT actually lock the door with the fob inside. So anyone could walk up and open door, and drive away...
3rd No need to remove the battery in the fob to turn off (See p. 123 of the owners manual)
So turn off the spare fob
Take the key out of the fob
    Place Fob in the truck
Hide the key under the truck
