Building a sleeping platform in the Tacoma bed really consists of two parts: the support framework and the deck.

    Support framework

Toyota has provided us with ledges on both sides of the bed (including the tops of the wheel wells), with notches for anchoring cross-members.

The notches measure 1" high and a little over 6" long. A 1" wooden slat wouldn't be very rigid. Some people go with a 2x6, but then they can't make use of the rest of the ledge. (The deck would be too high.)

Why not use aluminum extrusions, of the type used in the Prinsu rack? What I have in mind are two 1" x 3" x 57" bars in each notch. These are available at Tnutz.com for about $31 each.

Once the crossbars are in place, they can be joined in the center by another 1" x 3" extrusion, forming an "H" shaped framework. For a long bed, this would be 45 1/8" long. Available at Tnutz for about $25. (For joining, you would use hidden "L" shaped brackets in the slots of the extrusions. $6 for four.)

    Deck

The width of the bed, ledge to ledge, is 57". This means that a standard 4' x 8' sheet of plywood won't span the full width, if placed the long way. So, place it crosswise. I would cut the standard sheet to 57" x 33" (for a long bed) and use two of them. (3/4" thick.)

The two sheets would be independent. The sheet nearest the back of the truck could be stored on top of the other one, freeing up half the bed when the sleeping platform was not needed. Likewise, part of the framework could also be dismantled and stored toward the front.

For carpeting, you could use a single Bed Rug universal mat, since it's 98" long. Just cut it into two pieces and staple to the plywood.

    ........
I think this system would look a lot like OEM, if Toyota offered such a thing. Thoughts?
