Can someone educate me on the difference between a first gen DLX and an SR5?

The badging on my tailgate says SR5, but when I look up my vin number, it says DLX.
My instrument cluster is a basic one (tach, speedo, fuel, engine temp), but I have cruise control, A/C, a rear locker, ETC, and electronic fuel injection. I have an extended cab with the little baby seats in the back. I also have what appears to be an OEM towing package.

    What is this truck?

Try looking up your vin, tailgates are easy to swap.

It also has SR5 badging on the sides of the cab, on the back sides of the little extended cab windows.

My VIN tells me I have a 2.4l when I really have a 2.7l. Sometimes it's wrong. And I sincerely doubt someone took the time to do an engine swap on a truck with only 80,000 miles.

Yeah, I don't think the 'deluxe' came with all those 'advanced' features you list. You already looked up the VIN and it said deluxe, so I'm guessing it's an error in the system. Yours sounds like an SR5 for sure.

    Hey Logan,

How are you? Is your Tacoma a 1998 model year? The 1998 model year was a big change as far as badging, options and packages went. In 1997, the DLX or Deluxe was the basic option package, and the SR5 was the top of the line package. In 1998, DLX or Deluxe was dropped, and the top of the line package was the Limited. The SR5 for 1998 was the one above basic option package, and the one below the SR5 I don't even think was labeled. It might of been called the stock or regular package. The deceiving part about the SR5 package in 1998 was that SR5 packages came with almost next to nothing as far as options, and some of them came with everything even as much as the Limited package.

    Take it easy,
    Paul

Toyota slapped SR5 badging on a lot of models during the 90's with no rhyme or reason. With the older Toyota's I don't trust vin decoders but rather what rims it came with.
