I’ve been dealing with a rough idle issue for a few months now. Long story short, the dealership passes this off as bad fuel, the issue has persisted through several tanks of gas, and they’re still trying to pinpoint it.

Anyway, prior to this idle issue I noticed that when I am braking and the truck gets to about 25mph there is a pretty noticeable vibration/rumbling through the truck. Felt in the steering wheel, floors, and brake pedal. Almost like it’s “grinding” to a stop.

Even through this has been a thing long before the idle issue, I wonder if it’s related?

So tonight as I’m coming down my road I put the truck in neutral at about 30mph and braked to the stop sign. That rumbling/vibration feeling that is typically felt at 25mph was almost nonexistent when the truck was in neutral.

Anyone know what this could be?

Year, model, mileage and any suspension mods would be good to share.

We're pretty much guessing as is, but might guess better with that info.

Does a tech / service writer agree they feel the problem when joining you on a test drive?

If yes, ask them to escalate the issue to corporate and get a regional rep to check it out.

I’m not sure if they noticed that or not. They didn’t say anything to me about it, but I will bring it up to them. I’m sure my truck will be back in again soon as they’re still working on the idle issue.

what does it take to get a regional rep in? I have had a case opened with Toyota on the idle issue but I don’t really think that did anything. No one else besides the service department looked at it

What do you mean when you say rough idle?
Rpms are up and down or something else, like shaking?

OP, good luck....it's a known issue that seems to affect many Tacoma's...mine included. Mine has done it since day one and the dealership has thrown on three sets of wheels, three sets of tires, new brake drums, rebalanced my driveshaft and the problem persists. Mine is different, thought, as it seems to happen when right around 40mph in low RPM just causing along.

Yeah so the rough idle is the truck idling at 500rmp at stop lights. Vibration from the idle felt through the seats, wheel, and console. 2 times the truck has started shaking when idling and almost died

Yeah my wheels and tires almost always feel out of balance too. They’ve been rebalanced several times. Considering trying new wheels a time or two.

In all that the dealership has done, has it gotten any better at all?

Idling at 560 rpms is normal, assuming you have AT. This is a typical idle on the hot engine. Almost dying could be the fuel related. Did they look at your low pressure fuel pump?

Get obd fusion phone app and buy Toyota pids inside the app($16) , based on your phone OS, buy BT adapter on the Amazon( android is about $13.
Will help you set up the app and troubleshoot the idle

TSB I believe. Happens to mine slowing down, coasting to slow down and vibrates when just sitting at a red light.

it’s so bad that I can see the passenger seat shaking sometimes. I know the TSB says through 2021 but sounds like the same issue. I would escalate while you can. I was too late and passed the 30k mile warranty:(

It has NOT gotten any better. I'm convinced it's the torque converter that's acting up.

I have heard it could be something as simple as changing the leaf springs and some people just throw 200lbs of sand in the back and it fixes the vibration. I am planning to put on a camper shell so hopefully that will fix it. Anyways, good luck OP. I will follow this thread to see how it turns out for ya. Best of luck.

I don't think this is your issue, but my rough idle turned out to be a blown head gasket. Started out as a rough idle at start up. Toyota could not figure out, but charged me to diagnose and replace some parts that were not the issue. Then progressed to rough idle at start up and overheating on road. More misdiagnose, charge to diagnose and replace parts that were not the issue. Finally, a combustion check uncovered the real issue, head gasket. They only wanted 17k to fix that. My truck has 145k on the odometer though, hardly the same thing, just bitching publicly.
