20191210_185042.jpg It's a 3rd gen I believe it's #2 behind the oil filter housing its the only one that can't taken off easily

The problem is the oil housing prevents just removal without removing it I don't know if that procedure would be extensive or what the torque specifications would be do I drain the oil or will it stay in the pan ?

I guesstimate you'd loose only the oil in the cooling space...since it's higher than the oil pan. But still a mess...

Well that's the right view .....any idea what it entails taking it apart any thing I should be thinking about before removal or torque specifications for the oil housing or the tensioner? I do have to remove the entire cooler not just the top

Reviving old thread.... Can you not drop the skid plate and do this relatively easily from underneath or is the oil cooler still in the way? For the lower pulley

Me. Put me in the driver's seat.
It is still in the way per photo--taken from above but doesn't matter: you cannot replace the lower idler without pulling the oil filter mount. I've seen good engineering and I've seen bad, but this is just malicious engineering: these vehicles are intended to be used offroad and exposed to adverse environments like mud, sand, grit, etc. My idlers needed replacing at 60K even though my engine is protected by full length skidplates. But unless you have the foresight to pack an extra gasket and can figure out how to clean the crap off a dirty, oily exposed engine part, you ain't gonna do a field repair on this. I was ticked with the brake light leak that Toyota left on the backs of owners and I've long hated the stupid two-piece oil filter, but this pissant design is sending me to other brands when I (soon) replace the Tacoma.

And adding to all this, I added the Tacoma to my AllData subscription--and discovered that Toyota doesn't even give any instructions whatsoever to remove the oil filter mount. That means that 2021 Toyota is providing less information to users than Jeep did for my 2006 Wrangler. To me these are all signs of a company that rests on its past and doesn't care about the present or its customers....
