In the summer heat I like to eat lunch in my truck (A/C full blast) and idle for a good 30 minutes/day, 5 days a week. This will now end.

Not only is it bad for the truck but it has decreased my gas mileage from 22 mpg to 18. I fill up every 2 weeks instead of every 3 like i used to.

    Meh. Not so much.

Well yeah. It does use fuel to idle.

Feels that way...from what i have read, the fuel is partially combusted and leaves residue on your cylinder walls. Spark plugs also get fouled quicker due to this.

I know that it burns fuel to idle, but i wasn't aware of how much until my fill-up.

I’ve heard conflicting opinions. One things for certain - AC certainly works 10x better when your truck is in drive out on the road.

I’d just stop somewhere close and mooch off their AC aha.

Why can’t you eat in the office?
    Or is your office outside?

Yep....idling does use fuel, I’m not convinced it’s that bad for the engine. In extreme temperatures maybe. I see police cars idle for hours and then full throttle on a call, then back to idle. Those cars are used for over 100,000 miles and then sold to cab companies who repaint them and put them back to work.

Local prison (not affiliated) runs their crown vic's 24-7 doing about 5 miles a day around the perimeter. Oil changed every 3,000 miles. They are replaced every 10 years.

Other than the fuel consumption there are no ill effects to idling your truck. I idle my truck for at lease a hour 5 days a week my truck has almost 300k and still runs like a top! You got a TOYOTA BRO!

with the AC going you use about half a gallon per hour. Depending on where you are a half hour lunch costs about 2 bucks to idle. I live in a pretty cold climate and like to get into a warm truck so have looked at it a little.

As far as bad for the truck? Meh, if it's running right it shouldn't be overly rich so no issues with fouled plugs or washing the cylinder walls.

I always let my old girl warm up 10 minutes before I move. Winter and summer. Idling will not harm them. I will probably buy a Japan motor down the road. I’m not worried about the idle hours.

    Link?

I'd like to read that if it's an actual engineering article.
