If choosing in the midsized segment, 10000% the taco.

I've had a Silverado, a GMC Sierra, an F150, and a Ram 1500. Out of all of them my new Taco is my favorite. For what I need it fits the bill, and I don't think you can touch them on resale and reliability. I will never buy anything with a Jeep nameplate on it again. I bought a 2018 Grand Cherokee new and the problems started literally at 200 miles when a head had to be replaced because the valve channel was bored out of tolerance and a valve kept sticking open. So yea, I'd buy the Taco again in a heartbeat.

No way would I spend 50k on a Tacoma. I'd have a Tundra if my garage would fit it.
Now if it HAD TO BE a mid-size pickup? I still wouldn't spend 50k.
Wait for the 4th gen and see what's what.

I still miss the big truck ride and power sometimes but given Toyota's reliability and resale value it's a no brainer. It's actually the perfect size for me and the gas mileage ain't bad.

    * If you were buying today, would you still choose the Tacoma? Why?
Yea, probably most likely. Though, I would also consider a full-sized truck if I were to do it all over again.

    * What problems have you had that disappointed you in the Tacoma?
Love how refined the engine sounds. Hate how much of a wuss the engine is. Seating position in driver seat is just weird.

    * Were these issues significant enough to cause you to doubt the reliability of the truck?
    Nah.

    * What other trucks did you look at before buying the Tacoma?
    Gladiator

    * What did you like & dislike about them?
Gladiator price for comparable features to a TRD-OR was just too high. I needed the Tacoma to do truck things, already got a Jeep for Jeep things.

Yes because it's one of the few viable options out there with a manual transmission.

    absolutely yes.

Looks cool, 4 doors (for the kids), 18mpg with E load mud tires, has hauled tons of brinks , reliable enough and is the only vehicle that went up in value after purchase (33k-->40k lol how?).

also unlike a lot of responsible family men , I routinely abuse the family truck in all possible off road situations, with my favorite being hooning in the desert. There is no way a floppy ass tundra would be able to handle beating plus being able to fit through the rocks while still being able to park in normal human sized parking sports. On the flip side a Subaru crosstrek, Ridgeline, GX 460, 4runner ... all would fail the "requirement list":

-Easy to install hydro bump stop kit, so you can beat it mercilessly over the woops.
-Can haul new dish washer + water heater right out of the Home Depot parking lot.
-Has 4 low so you don't get stuck on snowed out highway 330 on the way to Big Bear with all your freeloader friends in the cab.
-Fit through tight trails. Or more importantly , can fit in CostCo parking spots on busy Saturday mornings and also squeeze into drive through for wife's Starbucks addiction.
    -over 16 mpg.

Some of them boner vehicles like the 4runner can do one or two of the things , but not all of them.

I guess a Ranger or Colorado are options too. Then again the Toyota dealer I purchased the truck NEW from, called me up and said "we fucked up, want to buy that 3 year old truck back, and we will pay you more that you paid new".... yeah , you think Ford or Chevy owners got that same call?

    Check build thread!
The only truck that would stop me from buying a Tacoma would be a single cab, long bed, 4x4, WITH the 10 speed, GMC Sierra 1500 3.0 Dmax. This doesn't exist, so yea, Tacoma ftw.

I would (and did) still buy a Tacoma. Legendary reliability and amazing resale value! I recently traded in my 2015 DCSB 2.7l 4cyl 4spd auto PreRunner 4x2 with 86k miles for almost as much as I paid for it 6 years ago. And CarMax turned around and sold it for more than I originally paid! Good for them.

I bought a 2018 DCLB 3.5l 4x4 sport. Love it even more than the 2015. Both are great trucks, this one just has more of the features I wanted but couldn't afford 6 years ago, and if not for the resale value, I couldn't have made it work.

I owned a 2000 Ranger years ago, and have known enough Ford truck owners...I wouldn't spend my hard earned money on a Ford truck again. Can't speak on the other makers. Tacomas will be my daily driver until they prove unworthy.

    Hola,

    My limited thoughts,

You’re in TW. Of course most answers will be yes.

I would buy again, 45-50K. No. I have an SR5 V6 with the 6lug axles 2wd. 35k. I don’t off road so perfect for me. It is a truck. 50k is getting luxury territory so I want my to drive my Lexus. I say buy a base 4x4 and use the cash to mod to get what u want.

The folks saying wait, prices will come down are crazy.

Yes because there's nothing I want around this price point.

Nope ,waiting on the new 2022 Nissan Frontier pro4x I’m sure a lot of Tacoma owners are thinking about doing it too. I’ve owned both and Tacoma’s are definitely not what they used to be. Had a frontier which I loved only sold it to upgrade to a bigger truck (tundra). Still can’t seem to get that trans shifting problem corrected. Had it in a 2016 and still have it in a 2019 I give up.

    Work in progress...
Hmmm. 50,000 in my pocket and I am looking for an auto. Is the Tacoma first on my list? I like that question. I am going to have to look at all the options and get back to you on this one. It could be awhile so if you don't hear back right away don't worry.

I wouldn’t buy anything right now prices are too shitty. Doing it over again I would’ve probably spent a little extra for an f150.

I still, to this day, can't figure out why people have a problem with how the auto trans shifts. And I'm on my 2nd third gen. When I want to go faster I push the skinny pedal down more.

You paid for the whole tachometer, use it. The 3.5 gives no shits about running up at 4k+ rpms. Rev it like a 4 banger. Truck doesn't care and it's not gulping down more fuel like a V8 in the high RPM band.

Or just put it in ECT mode and leave it in S4 if you want it to shift like the old V6's everybody seems to love for some reason.

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)
    I've owned 3.

My mind is starting to change with how I use the truck. It's a decent pick up, no lie. If I had to have a new mid size pickup, it's the only choice for me.

I'd rather have something I can beat on and not worry about the electronics safety stuff failing.
