If I buy kings or fox shocks without any tune, will they ride really stiff?

That's hilarious. Pretty sure those little shocks will need tuning for a full size tacoma.

Feeling stiff is going to be different from person to person. I have them with Icon leaves and so far on road is good, but that’s not where they are supposed to shine.

Good info here, I agree the Bilstein 6112 and 5160 are good for levelling and a good ride. Sold the fronts (15trd pro 6112) kept the 5160 out back, and got some adjustable kings up front. 2 clicks off the soft setting and they are NICE & plush yet controlled ride. Overkill for my mall crawling but fun to experiment with. I might try some TRD Fox Pro after just cuz it's fun to feel the difference in design, progressive vs digressive etc.IMG_20191108_071255.jpg

OP I'm fully aware that I know that you said you want kings for the sake of having Kings, but as somebody who bought a set of TRD Pro suspension, I think you could save a LOT of money and be very happy.

I am saying this as somebody who went from TRD OR suspension to TRD PRO suspension.

However, at the end of the day it's your money and your call. I'm sure you'll be happy either way. Another tuner to check out is Don Thuren fabrication in Bend Oregon. You can buy the coils and the tune from him.

thanks for reply. Yes, the more I think about. The more the trd pro seems appealing. Will look into it. Any idea if I need to upgrade front UCAs if I get trd pro fox shocks take offs?

As somebody who did the swap, no. It's the exact same UCA. However, with the money you saved you can ball out and get a pair of total chaos fabrications!!

I agree. If you want a King suspension under your Tacoma your buying them for a status symbol UNLESS you plan on doing some SERIOUS off-roading. If that’s the case go ahead and spend the cash. Otherwise purchase a front/rear set of TRD Fox take off’s, you will be thrilled with the ride on AND off the road.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
If it’s what he wants, why question it? His money.

OP, kings bumped a little to level will ride better than stock. There little preload to store energy in the spring and the valving is more than adequate.

If you could find a low mileage set at a good price it might be worth a shot. If not, it's actually cheaper to buy kings on sale like a group buy than new TRD Fox. I was searching for a while myself...

They show up occasionally on my local Craigslist. Sellers are usually asking around $1500.

so long as you're really considering these options, i suggest the TRD Foxes for you as they are easy to deal with and give a pretty good ride and a bit of performance. i abused mine until they died and recently replaced them with a full King set that I've been looking into and planning about 2 years. burning through the Foxes really helped me know the truck and its limits as a driver, and also what i needed to improve. that's how i ended up with a good investment in the Kings. their performance is another realm from the TRD Foxes. but honestly, i wouldn't have been able to appreciate their performance if i didn't kill the Foxes first... but that's just how i learn and go.

and definitely get UCA's if you have any interest in actually using those bits you're looking at.

That would be a pretty good deal. On line I've seen that and higher plus shipping. A new set of kings(fronts only) run for 1500 free shipping most places, but much cheaper on group buys... Something else to consider would be rebuilds. I think that the foxes could go longer between rebuilds, fox recommends 50k I believe. I hear Kings around the same if not sooner 30k or so.

Also have to keep in mind abuse. King may recommend 30k because they’re more well known as a racing shocks and the majority of owners abuse them a bit more than a leveled mall crawler. OEM Pro fox’s are designed to be all around daily driver with the ability to do well off road. They’re certainly not the same level as say a King or ADS coilover. In the same DD setting, Kings can go well past 30k

King will tune the shocks for you....almost any vendor can have King tune them to your specific setup, I'm not sure why people think only accutune can do this. In fact, almost every King order is a custom order, you can have King do whatever you want to them and no they don't charge extra for custom tuning. That said, the OEM replacements they offer are pre-tuned for a stock tacoma
