    This to my comment?

Agree. Best year is second gen 96. They are obd2 easily tuned now. Can take a gen 1 parts and make it 5 lug for tons of wheel choices. A 5.9 nv3500 5 speed with some bolt ons make a very fun truck,

    Many reasons...

    1) Because 1992 was the very first year they used the improved MAGNUM engines, a 3.9L V6 producing 180 horsepower and a 5.2L V8 producing 230 horsepower. With the exception of the 1989 Shelby Dakota, the 1987-1990 Dodge Dakotas had the underpowered 3.9L V6 making just 125 horsepower. The standard 2.5L 4, while reliable, had less than 100 horsepower. A 5.2L V8 became the top engine for Dakotas in 1990 or 1991, but this wasn't tuned up like the Shelby Dakotas and only had like 170 horsepower.

    2) Because 1994-1996 models with V6 and V8 engines both had 5 less horsepower than the engines in 1992-1993 models.

    3) Rear-wheel ABS was standard on all 1992 models, and 4-wheel ABS became available on all models for the first time 1993, with rear-wheel still standard.

    4) 1992 and 1993 models used superior and far colder R-12 Freon in their air-conditioners. 1994-newer models used R134a refrigerant as per the Clean Air Act and Montreal Protocol.

    5) Only 1992-1993 models were available this type of wheel: http://www.finishlinewheels.com/prodimg/ALY02001U.jpg

    6) The 1992-1993 models and 1994-1996 models have subtle differences in the front fascia/grille that the average person will not notice. I like the front end of the 1992-93 models better.

    7) The interior fit and finish of 1992-1993 models seems better than 1994-1996 models in my opinion.

I've also been told that the blind spots in FJs are horrible, as are the ergonomics of the interior/dashboard.

Back in 2012, I came across a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer 4x4. It was the classic 2-door body style, and 1994 is the last year for first generation. This truck's exterior was rough and a tiny bit rusty, but it had the Tahoe trim and was fully loaded. It was mechanic-owned and maintained. The guy who owned it smoked in it, but the interior only smelled faintly of cigarette smoke and it was very clean. It had working 4-wheel drive. On top of that, it had the reliable floor-shift 4-wheel drive and not the troublesome pushbutton 4-wheel drive. Power windows, power locks, and just about everything seemed to work. It also had working A/C, and only 130K miles. This Blazer had a dead battery, but when jumped, it ran like a dream. The only thing I could find wrong with it was that the cassette player didn't seem to work. Not a big deal... I would have put a Pioneer head unit with CD and USB in anyway... Factory speakers actually sounded pretty damn good...

    Asking price? $600...

    Interior is the same
5 hp difference was due to different exhaust manifolds which were very prone to cracking nothing engine wise.
Fronts changing was OK. I like the older sealed beam fronts but the ease of v8 swapping with newer fronts.
But a utility package gets you that old style with newer programming etc.

Excellent point. You learn something new everyday! You own a 1992-1996 Dakota yourself?

If I came across a 1992-1993 Dakota and an similar 1994-1996 model, I would take the older one over the newer one if the A/C worked because R-12 is so much better than R134a.

    Ha
    had a few.
Now I have 2000 modded RT.
On the hunt for reg cab 2nd gen for a 5.9 swap and tko600 swap that was meant for my rt. Being such a short trans my drive shaft would constantly have problems. So it didn't go in. A light gen 2 would be perfect.

There are a number of vehicles I could have ended up with if I didn't have the Tacoma...

My first choice would have been my mom's 2004 Honda Odyssey EX... Don't bash it because it's a minivan! It had ice cold A/C, 240 horsepower, and a surprisingly decent 6-speaker factory stereo with CD and cassette (CD player only worked when it felt like it but played iPod through tape player all the time). It also had room for 6 people not including the driver. Back in 2011-2012, when I was younger and had just gotten my license, I always got volunteered to drive everybody because my mom's van was so comfortable. It was a minivan only from the outside. Like I said, it had a 240hp V6 that would throw you back into the seat if you really floored it, and it certainly did not handle like a minivan. It handled like a midsize sedan (think Accord). And again, ICE COLD FRONT AND REAR A/C! Heat worked great too. Captain's chairs in the 1st and 2nd rows. Broke my heart when my parents sold it and bought a new car...

I anticipated that life goes on and vehicles get sold, and actually made videos to remember our vehicles that I had a particular fondness for...

The Odyssey (video is from 2011; you can see my Tacoma in the background in some pics, before I added the rims and stereo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNlMbd7XB1o

Second choice would have been my Grandma's 2000 Buick LeSabre Limited with less than 31K original miles when she stopped driving and sold it in 2012. My Grandma bought the car brand new (paid cash) and put just over 30,000 miles on it! The car was sold for $3,500 to a friend of my grandma's mechanic who gave it to their teenage daughter. That Buick had some dents and dings, and the interior was a bit worn out in places, but that car was solid. Again, it had the three things I look for in a vehicle...

    ICE COLD A/C
    HOT HEAT
    KILLER STEREO

And we're talking the factory Buick Concert Sound II system, with AM/FM cassette/CD combo. I only drove that car a couple times but absolutely loved it!

The Buick (video is from 2012):
