And vice versa for the manual?

I figured everything has a price, how important was your transmission choice to you?

+5k is typically something you see for a Diesel engine instead of gas in midsize trucks...for those that offer it
    ...so no for an AT

Is the MT cheaper to purchase though? So isn’t there a added on cost for AT?

Tough call. I have an auto, and enjoy driving an MT. On the other hand, I loath daily driving an MT in big city rush hour traffic, day after day.

My MT was cheaper. I was shocked. I wasn't betting on it because of the lower take rate and significantly more complex programming needed to make them behave well.

I would have accepted to pay the same as an automatic, I wanted a manual for longevity purposes. I'm scarred from owning a GM with a 4l60 I blew up.

Edit: before y'all rail on about programming being easier on a manual, you have to realize that everything is controlled with an automatic- it will only do so many things at one time. With a manual, to make it behave well, you have to have a way to deal with an unexpected clutch-punch, is the AC on? How do you taper the rpm for shifting where people won't hate it? There is so much work to make it behave like you think it will. To program for a manual now is like programming for an automatic used to be. On an auto now, you have your load and throttle input, you know the shift timing and you can sort it all out in a chart. Performance tuning? Easy, change shift points and firmness. Setting up a drive by wire engine with a manual is like trying to make Andre the giant into a ballerino. I'm not saying you can't but it's way harder than it seems.

I would have preferred a MT, but wanted leather, moonroof, JBL, etc, so it wasn’t an option (in 2017).

If an auto was an extra $5k I would get the manual and spend the $5k on an Atlas 4-spd

Manual transmission used to be called "standard transmission" because it was... standard, and the AT was an option that cost maybe the equivalent of $5k in current dollars.

I think most people wanted to pay more for the AT, and now the MT is almost extinct.

So yeah, most people would probably pay more to have the AT.

I just bought a '20. No complaints, love it. I do mostly 30-35MPH roads, the ECT holds it in (2nd?) lower gear too long for my liking at those speeds. Good for highway speeds though.

If the AT were $5K more than a MT on a Tacoma I'd buy something else. On paper an AT is about $1K more on the handful of vehicles still offering them, but in the real world the actual cost is closer to $500 if all things are equal. The problem is that all things are rarely equal making it hard to compare apples to apples. While the MT starts out cheaper, the money saved by not having to replace the clutch once or twice over the life of a MT more than offsets the added costs of an AT.

The only reason to own a manual is for the driving experience. Some guys just love driving them and I get that. I've owned a few Wranglers over the years and a big part of the appeal was to have a toy to drive with a manual transmission.

But my trucks aren't toys, they are tools that I need to perform, and an automatic out performs a manual most of the time. Especially when it comes to towing or hauling heavy loads. I realize heavy is a relative term with Tacoma's.

Yes. After driving a stickshift for 10 years thru nightmare city traffic (yes im looking at you Seattle and San Fran) i enjoy my knee not hurting. Esp with how crappy traffic can be in Orlando area or even space coast during spring break. took my drive time from 30 min to over an hour. lots of stop and go.

$1k is my tolerance for the auto in this puppy. More than that and I would have gladly said “sorry honey, just not gonna pay $2k for the auto, we’re going to have to get the manual”.

    Not in 2017.

Leather was only available in the Limited and Pro.
Could get the Pro with MT, but no moonroof or JBL.

All I'm missing is jbl. Even got the led headlights.

I know it's a balance of time, price, availability, prioritization and so on, i know this.

With the new kicker key amp and Focal making model specific speakers, I dont regret non-JBL at all. I have the head unit I wanted, I can deal with speakers later.

Edit: as in was typing this, I thought about your year might have been the hold up. I apologize.
