I grew tired of driving manual transmission vehicles. Now it's all about chillaxing and leave those quickshifting fun to the youngins.

Add me to team AT. I have driven manuals for years from LA traffic to off-roading and while it was fun at the time nowadays I would rather let the vehicle do the work.

I would consider it though if I were to buy a Japanese mini to play with.

So just because fewer newer cars are equipped with manual transmissions you say there is no need? Old manual cars will still be here 20 years from now riding the roads regardless of what’s produced from this point forward. I’m not sure about you but my daughter is 4 and believe me, when she’s old enough, she will know how to drive a manual Because it’s knowledge that can only help. Heck, it could even save someone’s life in the right situation.

I prefer a MT, but I found a pretty good deal on a used truck with only 8k miles so I'm stuck (for now) with the AT. I'm not real happy driving it so I most likely will be changing in a few years back to a stick if they are still making them.

    Meh.
    $5,000 bucks?
    That would give me pause.

I learned stick on a '63 VW bug...49 years ago.
Have driven stick all my life (all my trucks were manual).
The thrill is long gone.

I tried to teach Mrs Gritto how to drive stick shortly after we got married.
    That was a bad idea.
She's had her AT cars and I've had manual shift trucks.

Now I finally have a truck with AT...and power windows.
    Feels positively luxurious to me.

If they offered a manual in a longbed version I would have gotten a manual.

Nah ECUs are so damn fast now that there isn't any issue with a stick anymore. On my 2007 I definitely had to adjust due to the throttle by wire delay but that isn't even perceptible on the third gen. If anything it feels more responsive than an actual cable because there's no overcoming that initial friction to move the throttle plate.

Can't shift a MT as fast as an AT, which matters because we are all street racing our trucks.

Dealers intentionally keep MTs rare here, so they are usually more expensive than ATs

As for the thread question, I think it's sort of irrelevant as they would never charge $5k more for an automatic. I personally think the value is around $1k.

    My MT was $3000 less.

I drive 3 vehicles regularly, and all are stick (one is even not synchronized). I would kill for an automatic.

If you could put a 2nd gen 5 speed auto behind the Atkinson, you'd have an unstoppable combination and I'd give up my MT in a heartbeat. Unfortunately the current AT didn't meet my needs.

Yeah that's how it should be, but I think its market dependent. Evidently here in southern california there is decent demand for sticks, but numerically not a lot of buyers, so dealers keep stock low and charge higher prices.

They don't intentionally keep them rare, they intentionally don't want to hold inventory that is difficult to sell for no other reason than the fact is has a third pedal. Everyone can drive an automatic but I'd be surprised if even 10% of buyers even consider the MT given the 5% take rate. Most of those are people buying a Tacoma because it's the last option with an MT.

Most dealers might have just 1-2 on the lot because they know they can swap with another dealership if someone comes in looking for something they don't have. When I bought mine, every dealership in the region was trying to sell me the exact same truck.
