If you could do it over again, would you still have lifted your truck?

17x9 -12 with 275/70/17 Biggest size with out doing CMC, will still have to reshape liner, remove/trim mudguard and a bit of the flare at the bottom.

I don't beat my truck but I take it through tight trails and occasional "rock crawl" to get me to my destination. I still need more armor before I'm comfortable taking it through harder terrain.

Stock height with some knobby tires

Plenty good enough for most trails to get to good campsites that I go to.

    Great question.

I love my lift, and I convinced myself because it's an OEM piece it's somehow going to be sturdier than an aftermarket option. Will it be? Unlikely.

However, I have a clunk in my truck. I'm fairly confident it's not lift related, but one of the troublesome body mounts, or maybe less likely a skid plate. But, it's hard not to connect the dots as I noticed it post lift. I enjoyed doing the work and the sense of accomplishment after the fact, but that clunk is annoying. Since I did it myself, I can't exactly go to the dealer and get it covered under warranty (I'm out now, but noticed it pre-end of the 3/36) and I don't want to just throw parts at it blindly.

All things being equal, if the 2017 Pro had a moonroof, I probably would have gone that route instead of doing the suspension on my truck and paid a little more to have all the pieces. But, I love my truck clunks and all.

Another likely place to look ... you just had your alignment done and the lca/cam bolts are not torqued properly.
Was everything torqued on the rack when the lift when on or after it was set on the ground?

The LCA cams were the first thing I looked at when I heard the clunk. I went down that road with my 2G.

The only things I didn’t torque on the ground initially was the upper ball joint on the control arm and the sway bar mounts. I did my install by disconnecting the upper ball joint rather than the lower. My upright was preassembled by Toyota. I loosened and retorqued every bolt I touched on the ground last summer and redid the sway when I did the bar spacer.

I’ve had my skid on and off, though haven’t driven the truck with it fully off, but all my bolts are set to OEM specs. I noticed it about 3-4 months post-lift when the weather got cold.

Oddly enough for some reason those mounts terrify me. I’ve done suspension, the ECGS bushing, etc but after reading about people snapping harnesses and bending their core supports I’m hesitant.

When the time comes I would like to replace my OR suspension with 6112/5160 to tighten up the ride but I will stay stock height. Forest roads and boat towing are about all my my truck sees.

Agreed with pretty much everything you said except this. Not sure how an E-rated tire compromises a truck.

Tire weight and height creates stress the truck was not engineered for. The truck must constantly work to spin up a wheel set that is heavier and with a longer radius from the center point of torque delivery (axle). Both work against the power and gearing of the truck, as originally designed. The result is less fuel MPG and torque to ground.

That I get. But he made it sound like it would destroy a truck or compromise it. Maybe I understood wrong. But my 265/75/16 are barely an inch over stock but they are E-Rated and honestly I don't notice much if any issues over stock from a performance stand point. I do plan to re-gear to 4.88's though. But I sometimes to a Travel Trailer.

I have run 235/85/16 E's on several different trucks including 2 Tacos and a Land Cruiser, for years, with no issues at all. They're usually a solid 32" tall in most brands and wear like iron. I don't notice any difference in performance or wear on any components. But then, I don't lift my trucks, so...

Nope! Only thing you'll need are some different lug nuts to accommodate for the new offset.

I'm leaving my new truck alone.. Fine the way it is. BUT...
I used to have a 79' PowerWagon that was my toy for many years. One day I decided it needed a 4" suspension lift and some big bad-ass tires. So, new tires (I think they were 32x10's) .. Springs - Shocks - U-bolt kit - Drop pitman arm - Longer driveshafts, front and rear - New speedo gears for the tranny, so the speedo would be 'somewhere' close - Countless new Grade 8 nuts/bolts/etc ... More stuff I'm not remembering now and a lot of band-aids for broken knuckles. I think I probably spent about $4-5K when everything was all said and done. Did it look bad-ass? As about as bad-ass as it got. Did it serve a useful purpose? None. But it sure looked bad-ass.. LOL!

I have a 2019 DC OR 4x4 man trans, with a TRD skid plate, and 265/75 KM3 BFG and that’s about it. 4750 lbs (full tank of fuel). Just ran it on the scale about 10 min ago.

Yup, I like them! Still haven't hit the dirt yet(waiting on my lift). On road they are about the same noise as my ko2 below 45 and above they are only slightly noisier. I think they dive better then my ko2 did too.

Its the weight. The OEM tire weighs, what? 35lbs? An E-rated KO2 weighs, what? 55lbs? Thats 20lbs, per wheel, of sprung weight. 20lbs more weight of rotational mass, per wheel. That's more force going through the suspension. More weight the truck has to spin up, more weight the brakes have to slow down.

    Technically, it is unsprung weight.

At this point, I don't plan on lifting mine. I lifted my last vehicle 4", did custom coilovers, extended travel front suspension, etc. Wasn't worth the cost, loss in road manners, and reduced resale. Especially since it turns out I don't really enjoy extreme off road. I enjoy getting to a destination for camping or something, and the majority of those areas can be reached in a stock rig.

This has been a really good thread. As a new Tacoma owner I was all set to get a lift. Even had the install date set. But, after more research, and reading the posts here I decided against it for the time being. The various discussions in the thread regarding cost, maintenance/wear and tear, intended use, utility, etc. helped me out greatly. Hell, my Tacoma only has 7500 miles on it. I need to just enjoy it. At this point I may just upgrade my tires to 265/70s and call it good for now. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to the TW community. I'm glad I joined.
