It would fit without an issue. My '91 Explorer had a smaller engine compartment and I made one fit quite well.

The factory Explorer engine was the 4.0L V6. There was a 5.0L option in late 90's to early 2000's.

    I know it's a game of numbers but I've seen more 300K mile LS's than Tundra 5.7s.

In reality though I'd be happy with the 4.0 6 spd. stick shift. Something we never should have lost til hybrid or hydrogen.

I would go with the same one I had in my 2011 FX4. ...man that would be my dream vehicle, that motor in this truck!

That is the 4.0L SOHC engine... much better than the boat anchor engines in the 80's and 90's Explorers and Rangers....

Huge fan of GM's LS1 and LS3 engines. I'd do LS3 with AFR heads, FAST intake and a stout cam from BTR or Tick Performance. Even the 5.3L iron block with a small turbo would scoot nicely too.

Didn't know if they came out with a new manual for it; was just wondering, otherwise I figured it may have been an accidental combination of r150 of the 1st gens and T56.

    I'm familiar with the:

    R150
    R154
    RA60
    RC62
    W59

Manual transmissions but hadn't heard of the R156 yet!

A LS of course. If it can power a corvette and a 3/4 ton truck, efficiently and reliably, it's good enough for a tacoma.

I was thinking a 4.5L Diesel for torque... but instead I'll take a nice electric motor - 1 at at each wheel that is... please.

Last week I drove a Ferrari 488 GTB with a 3.9L twin turbo pumping out 660 hp. Yes, please! It might even fit.

Had that engine in my mazda b4000 and it was very reliable. Peak torque at about 3200 rpms (236 tq). It was very very thirsty though, the only downside. Miss that truck dearly.
