Some of the 2018s still had the old ECU programming, and I think the July and later build dates had the most current software. As for dual clutch transmissions, I'll pass that off to my friends at Wikipedia. They're also doing their yearly beg-a-thon, so feel free to donate...

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-clutch_transmission

As for the break-in period and getting 14.1 MPG, I have never gotten less than 18 MPG per tank average, regardless of driving condition.

The first 4 tanks on my new 2019 DCLB AT have averaged just 16.3 with 93 octane fuel -- and most of the 1200 miles thus far have been highway miles. I find myself driving like a grandma, but I still can't get the damn truck to average above 17mpg. Hell, the 4th tank is currently halfway gone and averaging just 15.3mpg!

Winter gas can account for some of this, but the consistently low mpg is beginning to concern me. After all, one of the major reasons I switched from my built-up Jeep (re-geared with 37s!) to this truck was to improve upon the impressive 14.5 to 15 mpg I used to average in the big Jeep. It's also one of the reasons I chose the V6 Tacoma over the various 8cyl full-size trucks on the market, but gaining just +1.5 mpg average with these cute little 31 inch stock tires doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence in the fuel efficiency of this truck. If this isn't just a break-in period thing, I may eventually need to reconsider my options.

    "20 mpg combined," my ass.

I get 16-7 in d mode and 19ish in s mode. No idea why. It drives way better by all standards in S.

If we are this close to Ranger intro and you aren't looking for an MT there is no reason not to wait and test-drive one. Just realize there probably won't be any deals to be had the first year or two.

I also own a 2019 and it shift just fine if you know/learn how to drive it. Some on here complained that the tranny is lazy and the pedal needs to be pushed harder/further to downshift, not the case with 19MY, it's actually the opposite. I feel like it is almost too sensitive. Slight push gets me a one gear downshift, harder push gets me two gear downshift. I took time to learn how to properly operate gas pedal and now it shifts exactly when I want it and how I want it. For example my MK7 R has a really "lazy" gas pedal compared to Tacoma, I had to install a PedalBox to adjust sensitivity and make it perfect.

First, welcome to TW. The point of test drives is to see if you like the way a vehicle performs. The Tacoma clearly did not meet your needs. Its not for everyone. Why try to force it? To me, the answer is simply buy something else.

I'm not an engineer, just a Tacoma owner. Based on what I read, OV Tune (and I know many will disagree, so save your bandwidth) sounds like over-promised hype. Their page (above) reads like one of those ads for regrowing hair. On and on and on. When does it end? When do you actually get to the point?

Einstein once said, if you can't explain it to you grandmother, you don't really understand it.

Well, sonny? Are you verbose on purpose or just showing off?

When you can explain it in 250 words, give me a call.

Yeah, upgrade to 93 for 16. That sounds like a deal.

You're welcome to your opinion, of course. If you like your truck the way it is, cool.

If you think Ovtune is BS, well that's your right too. It sounds as though you'll never know.

    A. Then if you're NOT an engineer, how can you definitively say that something is over-promised when there have been hundreds of satisfied purchasers?
    B. Did you read the whole contents in the provided link?
    C. Did you notice that most of the issues regarding the 3rd Gen Taco's engine were completely addressed with new programming etc?

When you can explain your ignorance in less than 250 words let us all know.

Amen to that. I'm fearing Ford will have capacity issues for quite awhile.

Yes I realize Toy made the 3.5 for the gen 3. I get your point. I guess to clarify what I meant by old tech is Toy's decision to use normally aspirated motor (non boosted) with less gears. This is their tried and trued approach but I do not consider it new tech. Not even remotely so. And my brief test drive did not impress me. That transmission on that particular truck was a mess. And the asking price was 42K. But I would not buy that truck on the assumption that maybe I could fix it later with some flash etc.. No, for that kind of money it better drive right out the door. Day one.

That was my test drive truck to a tee. A 42K dollar limited. My 2014 ranger had a 3.2 diesel with six speed. That's a good comparison for size motor and transmission. And I drove it for three years and never had issue with the transmission. That was a very dependable truck and very capable for the horrid roads in Fiji. So don't throw rocks.. I'll post a pic of it. This was in Raki Raki on the compound where my wife's childhood house was. Great views up there and you needed 4WD to get up there.
